Hello and welcome to How Do You
Drew?
This is a Drew Barrymore podcast
brought to you by the fans,
friends and historians behind
the Drewseum.
We’re drawing on over 25 years
of Drewbie expertise to dive into
all aspects of Drew’s world,
from her personal life to her
professional career.
Thanks to our sponsor and
friends at Positive Medium, I’m
Ann.
And I’m Ashley, and this week
we’re discussing something
that’s very much her personal
life and her professional
career.
Totally Venn diagram
intersection.
We are talking about riding in
cars with boys.
Finally.
Oh my God.
We’ve been putting it off and
putting it off and putting it
off.
But you know what, guys?
This is the 25th anniversary.
Yeah, crazy.
Like it was just it was on
October 19th.
We’ll talk about all that.
But yeah, we’re we’re right in
that time.
And we said, you know what, it’s
time.
Let’s do this.
Sometimes it’s the world telling
us it’s time, Sometimes it’s the
calendar, you know?
Yeah.
We’ve talked about the various
ways we pick our topics, but
yes, we are here and we’re just
jumping right in.
This is a big enough topic that
you know the top of the show.
Come back next time for more of
that.
Yeah, we have so much ground to
cover.
Yes.
I got you.
So yes, we are covering 2000
ones Riding Cars with Boys.
It’s currently streaming on Hulu
and Disney Plus.
That’s just kind of a bonus.
So if you like, haven’t watched
it in a while, you can go like
refresh yourself or maybe you
have it on DVD like we do.
Yeah, you should definitely have
it on DVD, and we’ll tell you
why at the end of the episode.
Yes, the IMDb summary for the
movie is a single mother with
dreams of becoming a writer, has
a son at the age of 15 in 1965
and goes through a failed
marriage with the drug addicted
father.
OK.
Accurate.
Yeah, close enough.
I’ll take it.
Those are those are the facts.
Those are the facts.
OK, so this movie was directed
by Penny Marshall.
Interestingly enough, this is
her final feature, which she
didn’t pass away until way after
this.
So it’s kind of kind of wild I.
Realized it was the last thing
she directed.
Interesting, I didn’t either and
we just encountered that with
Herbert Ross when we did Boys on
the Side.
It was also his last feature
when we went on movies that made
us gay that came up but anyway.
And Penny originally didn’t want
to do this movie but was
eventually worn down.
Did we know?
Like who else they even
considered?
Maybe they didn’t.
Know, I don’t think I’ve ever
seen that.
And I did some deep diving
research on this, guys, get
ready to hear all kinds of info
about this.
But the screenplay was written
by Morgan Upton Ward, and it was
based on the 1990 memoir of the
same name written by Beverly
Donofrio.
And the subtitle of that was
Confessions of a Bad Girl Who
Makes Good.
Pretty Awesome Makes Good.
Yeah.
And Beverly basically served as
a technical consultant on the
film, so they had her very
involved, which is so cool.
And like on set.
Yeah, On set.
Yeah, Absolutely.
So.
And then there’s tons of
producers on this.
Not Drew.
So this is not a Drew or a
Flower Films production.
The most important one, and
we’re most notable, would be
James L Brooks.
He is the father of Drew’s
longtime friend Amy Brooks,
which is kind of fun.
And he’s had the film adaptation
rights to this book basically
since it came out.
So this is like sort of his baby
in a lot of ways.
Yeah.
And let’s get into the making of
this movie, because there’s a
lot to talk about even before we
get into the movie.
Lots.
Lots.
And lots.
And Drew, of course, plays
Beverly and Donofrio.
I love that in our notes you
have her initials bolded.
Because Beverly and Donofrio
bad.
Yeah.
And you know what’s so funny?
In all the research I’ve been
doing over the last few weeks, I
never found where Drew, like,
pointed that out, but I know she
had pointed it out at some
point.
So funny.
It has to be like an interview
that was like an audio
interview.
Or probably probably a talk show
thing that’s not on YouTube now.
Yeah, it so sucks how much like
you have in your brain.
We have both have in our brain
and you’re always like, I don’t
remember the source.
And then sometimes later you’re
like, I found it anyways.
So when Bev was writing the
book, she had envisioned Cher or
Deborah Winger playing the part,
which is very interesting.
I know, wow, it’s so different.
Yeah, Drew described herself as
being very serious about reading
the screenplay.
She said when she finished it,
she knew she had to do it and
was willing to do whatever it
took to get the part.
They talk a lot about like how
rigorous the process was of her
getting this.
Oh yeah, we’re going to.
We’re going to get into that.
Yeah, Beverly’s complexities and
honesty and bravery, like really
spoke to Drew.
She loved that about her.
She said.
Also.
She loves also even how like
with all the challenges she
faces, she’s a very triumphant
person.
Does that sound like?
Right.
I wonder why, she relates.
Drew also said that the fact
that I’ve got her life back on
track, defied like the odds,
makes her hero to Drew.
Like she’s like, I mean, again,
who does that sound like?
I know it makes me think of
resilience, you know, It was
just a weird.
Yes.
OK, so both James Brooks and
Beverly both liked Drew for the
role and they even watched Ever
After together.
Like to decide if she would be
ideal, which is really cute.
Drew said that Jim Brooks, who
was one of the producers,
believed I was the person to
play this and I’m grateful he
was in my corner.
He wanted me to meet with Penny
before any other actors did.
I had the fortunate blessing of
being first in line to audience
audition, but it’s hard watching
everyone else go in after you.
I heard rumors that other people
were going to get it.
That lasted 3 months, but the
struggle made it all the more
rewarding.
And there’s, I mean, there’s a
lot of different versions of
what’s going on here.
Yeah.
Which we’ll just keep
explaining.
So Beverly liked to Drew for the
part because she said playing me
required someone who understood
the wild, willful, prematurely
screwed up person that I was.
Fantastic Drew seemed like a
natural which totally get that.
Interesting perspective, but
like.
True.
Yeah.
And that.
But she also, on the, like, flip
side of that is that she really
loved the idea of Drew being
this inherently lovable person
because she knows she’s not
going to come across as a
sympathetic character.
So it’s like, OK, I know.
I know myself.
This is Bev, right?
Like, I know I’m not very
likable.
Let’s get somebody who at least
like people root for.
Immediately, like, yeah, just
because of her innate
likability.
Yeah.
It’s so interesting.
She’s like, that perspective of,
like, I’d rather somebody, like,
who’s nicer than me.
Yeah.
Or, like, comes off as
friendlier.
Play me.
Yeah.
So meanwhile, Penny was worried
that Drew would sugarcoat her
performance and be too sweet.
Yeah.
And you can see this downplayed
so hard in the film, but.
Oh, yeah.
So she had apparently other
actresses come to her house to
audition for the role, including
Juliette Lewis, Kate Hudson,
Marisa Tomei, Reese Witherspoon,
Hilary Swank and Anne Hathaway.
I feel like Reese Witherspoon is
equally as sweet.
So I guess it’s interesting
like.
I know it’s, it’s just it’s
you’re going to see.
But it really just reads to me
as Penny was just like, I don’t
want Drew, you know?
Yeah.
So from Penny’s memoir, you
pulled a quote.
It said Jim came to me and
suggested Drew Barrymore for the
lead.
He saw her in the role.
I thought she was a terrific
girl and very nice.
But I had Marissa and Kate in
mind.
It didn’t matter.
Amy Pascal, the studio
president, informed me that Jim
had already promised the part to
Drew.
To Drew.
I was furious, is what she’s
literally said in her book.
It’s.
Kind of wild because I think
like, I don’t think Penny was
attached before Drew was
interested.
Like, I think Drew came first,
then Penny is given the job as
director, and they’re like, OK,
we want Drew and Penny’s like,
well, that’s not what I want.
I don’t know.
This is like Hollywood dynamics
that we don’t understand.
We don’t, we don’t understand.
But personalities, yeah, strong
personalities.
So Drew said that she had to go
in an audition for Penny for two
full days, doing every single
scene.
She says it’s in the commentary.
This is often.
James Brooks also said the
auditions were like someone made
an obstacle course for Drew
like.
So yeah, it’s not, it’s not
sounding like they just said
this part is Drew’s and you got
to accept it.
Like it sounds like Penny put
her through the ringers to get
the job still.
Right.
To like, make her prove that it
was for her, even though Drew
like says I was happy to do it
like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So obviously Drew ended up
getting the role, whether that
was against Penny’s wishes or
not.
And Variety was reporting about
both Drew and Penny being
attached as early as 1999, so
way out even before production
start, like more than a year
before, which is kind of crazy.
It makes it definitely makes
sense when Drew kind of talks
about how long the process of
this film was.
I’ve never been as scared going
into any character as I am with
Beverly.
I’ve never focused this hard.
I have completely walked away
from my own life for the last
seven months.
Fully immersed.
Oh, yeah.
And we have all kinds of fun
details about that.
Yeah.
So Drew became very close to the
real Bev when they first met, at
the first read through of the
script.
They stayed up all night
visiting Bev’s New York cons and
talking about their many
parallels.
This is just kind of like a list
of the interesting things to
have in common.
Yeah.
So Bev always wanted to be an
actress and Drew always wanted
to be a writer.
And of course, they ended up
with these opposite lives.
And then I just randomly, as I
was like typing something, I
think I was probably trying to
shorten it, I realized their
initials are opposite from each
other, DB and BD, which is just
kind of cute.
It is cute.
Oh, you know why I noticed?
Because when Drew writes Beverly
and Donofrio on a piece of like
a prop, I was like, oh, I can
totally tell it’s her writing
because of the B and the D.
And then you’re like, wait a
minute.
But like going a little deeper,
so Drew said I did relate to Bev
as a bad girl to the idea that
you can create this darkness in
your life that will over shadow
the rest of it, that people
won’t believe in you, you know,
and she understood everyone
knowing your life story and
knowing that you did this bad
thing, quote UN quote.
And she goes on to say that Bev
wrote this passage in her book
saying everyone would stare at
her like she was a freak.
Everyone would stare at me like
I was a freak for such different
circumstances, but the feelings
are the same.
She was a 17 year old pregnant
in Wallingford, CT, And I was
this kid that everybody knew was
stumbling because I was 13 and
had way too much too fast.
So it’s so cool that like,
totally different reasons,
totally different lives, totally
different decades, coasts,
everything, but they’re both
experiencing the same
experience.
Yeah, like how you feel those
things is so such a similar.
Yeah.
Right.
And how many people can relate
to that on that level that Drew
can?
Probably not that many.
No, no.
She also, of course, related to
coming from a dysfunctional
family and craving love from
that family.
And then it’s kind of this other
layer because she also really
understood Bev’s son, Jason, and
that she knew what it was like
to have your identity ensconced
with your mom.
And that created causing like,
resentment and a need for
separation.
Like her and Jason kind of went
through very similar things with
their moms for very similar
reasons, you know?
Yep, when it’s the only person
you have.
Yeah, exactly.
But yeah, they got very close,
and Bev even attended Drew’s
July 2001 wedding to Tom Green,
so who knows.
Nowadays I have a feeling they
don’t talk, but at at the time
they were very, you know, they
really loved each other.
Yeah, we’ll get into it later,
but I saw them together when I
went to the book signing and it
was like really cute to watch
them like have exchanges with
each other in between people I
don’t know.
So Drew was able to temporarily
reconcile with her mom Jade,
after about 8 years of
estrangement as a result of
doing this film and with a lot
of encouragement by Tom Green.
So she just sounds so funny,
but.
But he had this effect.
On her, he was very stable with
that stuff.
Yes, she said.
By playing a single mother in
the film.
I really started to appreciate
what a strong person my mother
was.
She dared to do it, to raise a
child without a father.
My father wasn’t around, and
when he was, he was drunk and
abusive, breaking things.
She protected me from him.
I resented the shit out of my
mom, but she stuck it out.
She didn’t bail on me, so she’s
seeing this parallel.
Of course, she also said I
respected my own mother
differently for the first time
because she was a young single
mother with a husband who chose
a substance abuse over his
family.
And Bev has to, as my mother
did, ask her husband to not be
around because it makes their
circumstances harder.
My mom had to make some really
brave decisions for the sake of
the family.
I just had like a thought.
I wonder if I doubt it, but if
Bev and Jade ever met.
Oh well, they were both at the.
Wedding.
Yeah, I bet you they.
Oh God, imagine those
conversations.
Yeah, I wonder if they really
like talked.
At all.
That’s cool to think about.
Yeah, I love that there are lots
of like quotes about this.
So Drew also said I called.
She’s about her mom, I’m
guessing.
She said I called my mom during
filming.
I told her what the movie was
about, that in some ways I felt
like I was playing her and that
it was the most important job of
my life.
A couple of weeks later, Tom and
I had dinner with her.
She gave me a photo album of us
growing up.
In it.
There was a picture of her in
a picture of me as Bev in 1965.
We looked at the same person.
I realized I’d become my mother.
I want to see this photo album.
Yeah, I know.
I think this photo that I
included in the notes and we’ll
put in the show gallery is the
one she’s talking about because
it is on the wall of her trailer
and.
And I see the resemblance there
with the dark hair and.
Totally.
Yeah, totally.
Another quote, she said.
I, we talked about what it was
like for her and I started
adapting it into my character.
So she used some of her mom’s
experience to informer
character.
That’s so interesting.
Drew compared Bev’s dramatic
Ness to Jade’s own and borrowed
a lot of Jade’s manner,
mannerisms, and habits.
Or the older version of the
character that’s also
interesting to imagine.
And we’ll point those out as we
go through the movie.
Like as we go through the movie,
like scene by scene, we’re going
to have so much interesting
stuff to tell you guys about,
like behind the scenes or Drew’s
mindset.
She does the commentary for the
DVD, so we know so much about
what she was thinking and all
these great little tidbits.
So we’re not just like breaking
down the movie.
We’re telling you all kinds of
other fun stuff.
About things that she’s shared
that yeah, yeah, that have been
compiled.
OK, so let’s talk about some of
the other notable cast and crew,
says Steve Zahn.
The amazing Steve Zahn is Ray,
you know, he is the father of
Bev’s son, Andrew said.
He is incredible.
He’s the most amazing actor.
And she just seemed to have
really, like, high respect and
regard for him.
Yeah, I mean, he’s just so I.
Always like Steve Zahn in the
movies like.
I loved him ever since that
thing you do and reality fights.
Like he’s just so freaking
great.
Yeah, so awesome.
And then of course, we have the
wonderful Brittany Murphy RIP as
Faye.
And the character is based on a
real person named Hope, who was
Bev’s best friend.
And Drew and Brittany became
very close during filming.
Drew said they would be like
stick together and drive each
other through it.
And she felt so safe with
Brittany and that Brittany is so
important in the film.
And it is like, it is really sad
when all of a sudden she’s not
in the movie anymore.
Like, you really feel a loss of
her character.
And then Brittany said about
Drew.
This is so sweet, sorry spit.
She was my role model growing
up.
But once we met we immediately
clicked.
It was like an old girlfriend I
had known for years.
We laughed and joked through the
whole thing.
Drew is an amazing talent and
she is a role model for so many
women because she is who she
says she is.
Oh, I.
Love that.
I know.
And then do you remember this?
Drew interviewed Brittany for
her December 2002 interview
cover feature.
I read through it.
We’re lucky enough to have a
copy.
So I have a transcript and they
don’t really talk too much about
this movie, but it’s so obvious
they have so much love for each
other.
Yeah, it is very sweet.
Rest in peace, Brittany.
Yeah.
And then we have James Woods as
Beverly dad.
He also played Drews dad in the
experience really helped her
have those paternal feelings for
toward him.
Like immediately he’d treat her
like he was her father and he
remembered how she was as a
child.
There’s a sweet moment, I can’t
remember when.
It is later when he says
something really sweet to her
and in a part in the movie like
you were so sweet as a kid or
something.
Oh, yeah, no, that was one of
their like, off camera.
So they would like work together
off camera.
I think she said she did maybe
the most with him and like in
character, but not filming.
And that was one of the things
that he said to her was you were
such a sweet little girl.
And it made her like cry because
it’s it was for the scene where
she tells her parents.
Yeah, she’s.
Pregnant.
And it was almost like, I’m so
disappointed in you because you
were so sweet when you were a
little girl.
And I think like, he’s pretty.
I don’t think people like him
much.
I guess I think.
He’s controversial character
but.
There’s some controversial
things about him in his personal
life for sure.
He, he was.
Great in this movie and I do
love that they have that
history.
Like that’s just kind of unique
and really special.
Yeah, and Speaking of people who
are great, Lorraine Bravo has
Bev’s mom.
She’s.
So great, Drew said.
She’s the nicest, most
incredible woman.
She has the light around her.
She really is Ma.
She is perfect in this movie.
Like she walks the line of the
comedy and the seriousness, like
really pitch perfectly.
Yeah.
Like I’m I’m there with her
through all of it.
I’m never like, oh, that was a
little.
Goofy, you know, like she’s
funny, but in just the right way
I feel like.
Yeah, she, she figured out
something about how to navigate
the Penny Marshall Yeah
situation.
I think maybe it is that she’s
like, I don’t know, I don’t
know, already has the right like
cadence or something for it.
I don’t.
Know.
Yeah, definitely.
There are lots of other great
people in this film.
We will mention many people
throughout what we’re talking
about the movie itself.
Yeah, it’s kind of huge how many
people are in this movie.
Like I started to put some of
them at the top and I was like,
there’s too many, We’ll just
talk about them as they come.
Yeah, yeah.
And I know that we’ve got some
in our notes.
So hopefully, yeah, you know,
hopefully it’s, you know, enough
for y’all.
But you can go look it up or you
can watch it.
Hopefully, hopefully you have
before watching this recently.
OK, so should we talk about the
hair and makeup?
Oh, with some of our faves that
we have Kim Greene, who you guys
know we absolutely love.
We’re lucky enough I would call
her almost a friend.
Like she’s so cool.
She’s so great.
I know.
So she’s done Drew’s makeup in
so many films.
This was actually kind of one of
more of like the tail end of
their run together.
But the notable ones, you guys
as like Ever After and the
Wedding Singer, Never been
kissed.
Charlie’s Angels, like we’re
talking the Renaissance period.
So her method was that she
picked some actresses born
around the same time as the real
Bev.
One example they give was Cybil
Shepherd.
And then they noted how she
aged, which is a really cool
idea.
That’s so smart.
And she recently put up some
face charts on her Instagram
demonstrating the aging
techniques she used for this
film on Drew.
And, you know, they’re they’re
subtle, which is great because I
think, you know, they could have
gone a little more extreme.
Like we will talk about like how
Drew wants what her method was
for aging throughout the film.
But they had looked at
prosthetics and it was like,
what are we doing?
Like 36 is not old.
Yeah.
Which now it’s even funnier to
me that I’m.
We’re both. 30.
Six.
Yeah, Why does she?
Even have Gray hairs I.
Know the fact that she does it
at all, it’s a little bit like.
Yeah, and then of course another
heavy hitter, Barbara Alvera.
She did Drews hair and again,
she had been with her from
Scream all the way on all the
Charlie’s Angel stuff.
So Drew would spend a lot of
time collaborating with both Kim
and Barbara on what her looks
would be on every film they did
together.
Like Kim always talks about,
that was one of her favorite
parts.
Like they would get together and
really figure it out and
sometimes the costume person
would do it too.
And there are some really cute
hair and makeup tests on the
DVD.
They’re super quick, but they’re
like actually the three girls
like dancing in the 60s and they
have this like huge bouffant on
Drew.
It’s very different from what
they ended up doing, but it’s so
cute.
It’s so cute.
I always, we always love seeing
that kind of stuff that doesn’t
end up, but it’s like part of
the process.
Could have been scenes.
Exactly.
And then we just have to shop
this guy out because we love it
when he shows up.
Chris Miller.
And he was Drew’s assistant at
the time, which is so funny.
Like still still just a little
assistant.
He hadn’t gone up the ranks
quite yet.
Yeah, and this is right before I
met him.
Also, God, yeah, this is like,
this was at the book signing
rate when you met him.
Oh my gosh.
OK, Isn’t that why I love it?
I mean, there’s so many reasons
why this movie that like, I
mean, we’ve been avoiding it
because it’s like hard and big
and all those things, but it’s
also like very much like, I
don’t know.
I don’t know.
What I was important, it was
really important when it
happened.
Like we lived through this movie
that is like so huge in Drew’s
career.
True.
But like, disappointing.
And I mean, there’s just a lot
that we’ll get into.
But yeah, it was.
It was a big time.
Yeah, yeah.
OK.
So the filming schedule, it’s
long, so there were months of
auditions and rehearsals, which
we kind of like talked about the
audition part, but that
continues.
The movie was shot mostly in New
York and New Jersey.
Filming started in August of
It was notable that Drew filmed
her Johnny Darko scenes the
second to the last week of July.
And I think they had to, like,
do her scenes immediately, first
quickly because she had to go
film writing cards with boys.
Like it’s.
And when I like, put that
together, the timing, I was
like, oh, we have to talk about
that because I do see some
similarities in those two
characters as far as like, they
don’t really smile.
She talks about how in Donnie
Darko she doesn’t smile either.
Yeah.
You know, she does smile on
riding cars with boys, But for
the most part, she felt like she
was walking around never
smiling.
Yeah.
And, you know, they’re very
serious and the hair is the
same.
You know, it’s true.
I.
Actually didn’t realize they
were like that.
So close.
Like they were right on top of
each other basically.
Yeah, absolutely.
Filming wrapped in February of
So really long shoe.
I think she says 8 months.
Is that math She?
Says 8 months.
It’s six months and then
whatever.
I think the rehearsals were like
really intense and went off for
months beforehand.
Yeah.
So Drew had taken some time off
in October and November to
promote Charlie’s Angels.
I like it’s like time off.
She took time off of filming to
go and work.
To do her other part of her job.
Yes, according to Steve Zahn,
Stand and the cast was paid in
full for the unavoidable
shutdown time.
That’s so interesting.
That’s nice.
She also took another break in
December of 2000 to film Freddie
Got Fingered in Vancouver.
Which was probably, again, like
a week.
Yeah, totally even.
Yeah, because it was very short.
But how funny like that that’s
in the middle of this.
So different.
All of It’s weird, but then when
you think about it, the hair is.
Just the same, the hair is the
same, but when when she talks
about how like immersive this
film was and how like she was
she.
Was.
Bev but then like you think
about like she was also
promoting Charlie’s Angels in
the middle of it.
Like what?
A different switch to have to
flip?
Yeah.
I wonder if we were to like kind
of look again at her promoting
at that time if we would see a
different Drew.
I don’t know, but I don’t think
so cuz she’s with, you know, the
angels and I don’t, I don’t.
Think so either.
But maybe she, like, when she
was, like, on set and when she
was there, you know?
Yeah.
So during filming, Drew and her
new fiancé at the time, Tom
Green, would send each other
love letters and flowers and
care packages while they were
apart.
Sent me a letter.
Someone sent me a letter.
Drew lived through this intense
shoot only for her house to burn
down literally 2 weeks after she
returned to LA.
Again.
I didn’t realize that was so
faint close in there either.
Yeah.
Putting these like this timeline
together, it’s just nuts how
much she has going on.
At this time.
Yeah, I mean it’s.
Crazy.
Like you note here that they
were like looping dialogue as
late as September 24th of 2001,
but that also means like
September 11th happened right in
here too.
So like, she was crazy.
Do you find like, I don’t know
how close to the wire you get
when you’re editing a film, but
for her to still be looping
dialogue like less than a month
before the movie came out is
that seem?
I have no idea.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there
were like.
Well, I know they do like tests
like, like, yeah, like screening
test screenings before, like
music is in.
And I don’t know how close those
are to when things are released.
Yeah, I was just like, damn, the
movie was about.
To come out like me editing the
podcast, yeah.
Pretty much, except it’s an
entire movie.
Yeah, but no, that seems close.
But who knows, maybe it’s like
it’s such a last minute, like,
you know, them tweaking audio
might be one of the last things
they do I.
That’s true.
I don’t know.
Someone chime in, if you know,
please.
Yeah.
All right, so let’s talk about
Drew’s process.
We keep alluding to this.
So yes, she frequently has said,
like many, many, many times,
that she essentially had to
become Bev.
She’s like this.
I wasn’t making a movie.
I was Bev.
Like, she wouldn’t acknowledge
that this was a film.
So somewhere like, I would see
lights and be like, what are
these?
I don’t understand.
Yes.
She would, like, never look at
the monitor or watch the
dailies, which was something she
normally would do.
I thought this was kind of a
cute little anecdote.
It came up more than once and I
was like, I have to include
this.
So in September of 2000, filming
is already underway.
Penny took her to a Barbra
Streisand concert.
And when Barbara started singing
Papa, Can You Hear Me, Drew just
was bawling because she was, she
was Bev and she was feeling this
as bad.
Oh.
My gosh, she.
Wouldn’t let herself do anything
anachronistic.
So he wasn’t watching TV, she
was trying not to talk on the
phone, she was only listening to
music of that films era.
She does this exact same thing
when she does Grey Gardens.
I can’t wait to talk about all
the weird parallels between
those two projects, but same
exact process, she said.
I got to the point where I
actually envied people who read
magazines.
Overall, I really lived in a
microcosm and it was.
Hard.
That was from.
Flaunt and the interview was
like, oh, so you were like
missing your People magazine?
She’s like, even Us Weekly,
like, I need the tabloids tell
me what’s going on in Hollywood.
Like, just something stupid and
shallow, you know, That’s
really.
She made sure to read books by
the authors that Bev had liked,
including F Scott Fitzgerald and
Shelly and Hemingway.
She probably loved that part of
it.
And then her trailer walls for
the movie.
So on set, her trailer was
plastered with inspiring
sayings.
One of them was normal is what
we all strive to be but never
feel.
We are so perfect for both of
them.
And then there were photos.
Just like, it’s so cool.
There is a whole trailer tour on
the DVD.
There’s just this wall of photos
and she had like some of Bev and
there’s one of her grandfathers
profile next to her own profile
and then this one of her and her
mom from 1978 that we mentioned.
It’s really neat.
I wish we could like zoom in
even closer on these.
They’re they don’t show them as
closely as I wish they would.
I know.
Same totally.
Also in the trailer she had a
heavily annotated copy of the
book writing cards with boys.
What she said was like her
Bible.
There is like a little shot of
her flipping through.
It doesn’t even show that it’s
her or why it’s being flipped
through but.
I was like watching.
And I was.
Like, oh God, I saw what you
were talking about and.
And we always love talking about
how she annotates her book.
So, I mean, this was probably
that on steroids.
Totally, Yeah.
She also had this little altar
to Bev that had like the Virgin
Mary on it and a portable record
player.
So one of the things she would
do was she would listen to
different songs to get her
prepared for certain scenes.
So I just made a list of the
ones that she mentions
throughout all kinds of places.
And so she listened to Tangerine
by Led Zeppelin.
Love that song.
I totally remember downloading
these songs at this time through
Napster.
By the way, I.
Love it.
Don’t think Twice It’s All right
by Bob Dylan.
I, me, mine.
And she’s leaving home by The
Beatles, of course.
Sweet, sweet baby, Since you’ve
been gone by Aretha Franklin and
something by Carole King she
doesn’t name.
What it is, Yeah, but I love
that.
I love that she like, tries in
the commentary.
She’s like, what did I listen to
here?
Yeah, it’s.
Really neat, like what a cool.
I just that’s a really fun idea
to do it that way.
Yeah, she said that she realized
that the person she came up with
for the character of Bev is a
combination of four people
herself, her mother Beverly,
herself and her son Jason.
She said that I know it’s really
interesting she considered using
prosthetics for the aging.
We mentioned this for the
process of going to from 15 to
height.
She said her legs started as
This is Drewism
Alert guy, this is a Drewism.
Big time.
She said her legs started as
drumsticks rubbing together and
by the end they are long celery
stocks.
So let’s translate.
So you’ll notice when she’s
young in the movie, she’s always
wearing flats.
And like, she definitely, like,
sees herself as like this tiny
little squatty thing.
And then as she gets older, her
heels start getting higher and
she looks kind of like stretched
out.
And it is effective.
Like, I see what she’s talking
about.
It does work.
It does really neat.
She also I think the thing that
is more doing the aging kind of
is this voice like the way she
changes her voice, she is much
more dramatic excited as the 15,
Yeah, but and then I was like
kind of thinking about like,
what did Drew sound like when
she was 15?
And she was actually very like
kind of dry and you don’t like
calm.
Yeah.
And I’m like, she probably
sounds more like this excited
girl now show than she was at
She.
Had to switch the other way.
Well, that’s true.
It’s weird aging that makes no
sense.
For you, that’s true.
We’re never going to know.
Playing Bev was painful for
Drew, she said.
Spending months being unlikable
and barely smiling was really
hard for her.
We have a little audio clip.
When I was doing riding in cars
with boys in order to be Beverly
and Donofrio, I didn’t smile at
people and it was so painful.
People would walk by me and I’d
be like, but normally who I am,
I’d, you know, be like, hi, how
are you?
Flowers and dances and
butterflies.
We love that.
Yes, we do you.
Guys know we love Diary, she
said.
I told everybody in my life and
I’m not going to talk to them
until January.
I have made more enemies than I
haven’t care to acknowledge
because I can’t deal with the
outside world.
I just live inside this woman.
I have purposefully lost touch
with who I am it seems like.
Who are the enemies, by the way?
I don’t know if I.
Believe that, Drew.
I don’t know if you’re imagining
this.
They weren’t your real friends.
If they can’t handle that, Yeah,
for a few months.
She also said to go back and
feel that self hate for making
those mistakes, for thinking you
are a bad person was really
intense.
Also, it’s interesting because I
feel like I think she says this
in the commentary or something
about being a bad person that
they like both thought that they
were bad people.
I’m like, yeah, why?
We don’t even really know why
Drew feels that way, but.
I know.
I mean, yeah, when I read that
exact quote, I was just like,
because we keep coming across or
talking about this in like more
recent years and we keep talking
on the podcast.
So I’m just like hyper aware of
when she talks about this now.
And I was.
Just, and I kind of get it, but
I also it’s like it’s something
that’s it’s a trauma thing.
Yeah.
She said it was disturbing every
day, the questioning, being in
touch with the pain, She said I
have opened up a serious box
inside of myself for this
character and I have anger and
pain and sadness and confusion
and regret like these are.
This is intense.
Yeah, very.
It kind of makes me think of
like mad love, how she had to
tap into like, real, yeah,
personal trauma that she’d
experienced.
Totally.
But she said that she was a
better, stronger, more clear
person from having gotten lost
in this experience.
She felt like she’d completely
been found.
So it’s I wonder like I wonder
when she’s done the most
therapy.
I feel like even years after
this like.
I mean, I think now.
That’s what I mean.
Like I feel like it was like
years until she actually did
like therapy.
But a lot of the things that she
like, thinks about, and I guess
true, is always kind of like
finding and refining herself
though too.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I don’t know.
It’s just, I’m.
I’m glad it was cathartic, but
it also sounds like it was
really hard and like, for her
house to burn down immediately
afterward and just be like, wow,
I don’t even know who I am
anymore.
And now I just lost all my
possessions.
Like, what is happening?
It does it.
Like I can’t believe her and Tom
were able to get through some of
the things they got through.
Yeah.
Only to like once everything was
calm suddenly and that like it
didn’t work.
It’s almost like.
They drunk.
Bonded or something?
Yeah, the chaos like helped
them.
I wonder.
Like he got sick so soon after
they got together like so.
Soon that.
Yeah, that.
Too.
That too.
It’s just wild.
OK, so according to a lot of
people, Penny was extremely hard
on Drew.
When asked by Flaunt magazine
what it was like to work with
Penny, Drew’s quote was my God,
she’s so intense.
She.
Speaks highly of her.
I don’t want to make it sound
like Drew ever badmouth Sir.
She doesn’t all.
But it’s really easy to read
between the lines and see how
this was, like, challenging
because Drew likes to feel safe
with her directors.
And I don’t think she felt that
way.
Yeah, so Drew also said not
often can you work with the
director who’s going to work
your bones into the ground from
morning till night?
Who’s going to make you do a
film that could be done in two
months and take eight months?
Another comment from Steve’s on
stand In, he said, I felt Penny
could be very hard on Drew.
After all, the character was in
New Yorker, closer to Penny’s
vibe than Drew’s valley girl
vibe.
Drew, a sweetheart, took it all
in stride.
She’s definitely a talented
trooper.
So I’m like, so curious what he
was witnessing to like to say
that, you know, to glean that
information.
Yeah, Penny told Drew she didn’t
want her to see her do anything
like she’d done previously in
her other films.
She said she’d, like, watch her
like a hawk.
And I definitely see, like,
shades of Josie Grossie in the
young version of Beverly.
So I’m like, oh, why didn’t she,
like, say, hey, maybe she
wouldn’t watch Never Been Kissed
or something like this, and then
she would, like, act out the
scenes to show Drew exactly what
she wanted her to do?
I was like, is that why her
voice sounds sort of like a
Penny impersonation?
Like I saw something somewhere
that was like, yeah, that’s not
really a Connecticut accent.
It’s like a New York accent.
And like it sounds like Penny.
Yeah, the way that she like
sounds like she’s like keeping
her teeth together her.
Jaw clenched.
Yeah, yeah.
It’s interesting.
And I wonder, you know, we’ll
talk about the performance and
all that later, but I wonder if
Penny had given her a little
more space and freedom to do it
as she wanted.
Like I wonder how that would
have looked if it would have
been different because I
definitely think she was.
Like, this is exactly how I want
you to do it, like always.
And that’s probably why she
sounded like Penny.
That’s what I’m saying.
Like here’s how I want you to
deliver this line.
Yes.
Yeah.
Drew wanted Penny to help her
get upset for the scenes that
required it, but apparently
after like 2 days, Penny was
just over it.
Like I can’t do, I’m not going
to do this.
And it really tracks.
We’ve we’ve brought this up a
couple times.
Tamra Davis describes that for
Guncrazy, Wes Craven for
Scream, and even when Drew goes
to loop the dialogue for riding
cars with boys, you see her kind
of laying on the floor with
Penny as if Penny has helped her
start crying.
And then she goes to the mic and
delivers our scenes.
So yeah, kind of wild.
But Penny was like, unwilling.
She’s like, I’m not going to do
this all the time.
This is exhausting.
Yeah.
Another quote from Drew.
She said we were never not
friends, but there was not a
nurturing feeling there.
She kept our relationship
appropriate for the dynamics of
the film.
If it was hard for me or painful
or confusing at the time, I know
why she did it now.
So like I said, Drew always
speaks highly of her.
Now She’s like, thank you so
much for giving me this
opportunity, even if it sounds
like it was against Penny’s
will.
Yeah.
In MTV’s Diary, which we’ve
talked about a lot because this
is, like, promotion.
It was promotion for this film.
Drew describes her relationship
with Penny as incredible and
insane and intense, And she
doesn’t think many directors do
things the way that she does.
Like, she pushed her.
And in some ways, I think it’s
beneficial.
In other ways I don’t know,
like.
Yeah.
There’s a lot of we have a lot
of conflicting feelings about
how this movie turned out.
We do, but.
At least in the press materials,
Penny was really complimentary,
She said Drew worked really
hard.
This is probably the hardest
she’s worked, and I think she’s
done a damn good job.
I totally believe in her.
So finally she got to that
place.
That’s good.
I’m glad that was in press.
Just one more thing I want to
say about, like, behind the
scenes before we actually go
through the film.
Yeah.
So you guys might know about
these photos of Drew dressed up
like a nun that she took for
Steven Spielberg.
He claimed on the Drew Barrymore
Show that it was like a reply to
doing Playboy, which doesn’t
make any sense because.
They drew six years to reply.
Actually took those photos on
the set of writing cards with
boys.
Like we don’t know anything
about, like, how it came to be.
Why?
But yeah, you can see that she’s
on the street that, like, her
family lives on in the movie.
Yeah.
In these.
Photos, It’s just so random.
It is really random.
And we don’t even know why she’s
dressed like a nun at all,
right?
It’s like, no, yeah.
No context beyond what you know
that it was supposedly to say.
I’m sorry for Playboy, but.
Don’t buy it.
Or maybe it was like, I mean,
maybe there’s part of that
that’s true.
And it was like I’ve been saved.
Yeah, yeah.
You know, it’s just so funny.
It was so much longer later.
Totally, totally.

Let’s get into the film itself.
Of course, spoilers.
Guys, if you’re listening to
this episode, make sure you’ve
seen the film or at least know
what happens.
And we’re just going to talk
about the stuff we love.
We don’t talk about every single
thing in the movie.
But Drew is in almost every
scene, so we are talking about a
lot.
Basically the whole movie.
That’s true.
That’s true.
But we won’t like always talk
about the entire narrative.
We’re not doing like a.
Beat by beat.
Yeah, exactly.
OK, so the movie starts and it’s
We have child Beverly.
Lena Dunham apparently
auditioned for Young Bev, but
Mika Borum is one who got the
part.
I like your note here because
you say that she’s adorable and
does a good job.
Yeah, she’s so cute and so
great, but I’m like, I don’t see
Drew in her at all.
No, me neither.
Which is it’s surprising because
I think Penny prides herself on
casting like the Jasons in this
movie.
Perfect.
Like, they totally feel like the
same person the whole way
through.
But yeah, I don’t see this as
Drew.
Me neither.
She’s very cute and sweet.
She is cute, she’s got a good
energy.
So we learned right away that
Beverly is into drama and boys
and she loves her dad to be like
right away she’s talking about
all that in the car.
And I love that you spotted this
cuz I never noticed this before.
So they show the mantle of the
home and there’s a picture of
like actual baby drew on the
mantle.
I know I and this is kind of a
rare one that I think we only
saw in like ATV specials that I
think Jaid would have provided
this, which is kind of maybe it
was in that album that she gave
to Drew.
Oh, maybe so.
I bet you, But yeah, I’d never
noticed it either.
And then this is probably just
one of those things that we just
have better TV’s now.
Yeah, totally.
So funny.
It is funny.
So Penny made Drew audition with
the scene in the car.
So she was like having her do
the little girl everything,
Drew.
And when she was doing it, she
like talked really young and she
said it was like Drew was saying
it was such bad acting like she
put she really put her through
the ringer.
Do the 12 year old go?
Ahead, there’s the obstacle
course.
Yeah, that’s where it starts
exactly.
So then we flashed to 1986 and
we have 36 year old Bev in New
York City, Drew said.
It was so cold that day.
I think it’s one of the last
things they filmed because like,
we have paparazzi photos and
it’s already into the year 2001.
I know that she describes Bev as
this hardened person.
So that really comes across in
these like older scenes.
She’s really, like, much more
serious and, like, kind of rude.
I mean, I guess she’s always,
yeah.
Stern OK, but rude is a is a
good word too.
Yeah.
And Drew actually kind of
admires her rudeness.
She’s like, I would never be
able to, like, you know, someone
pick me up late and, like, be
mad and be like, where were you?
Like, I would never be able to
do that.
I’m curious, like, how do you
feel about Adam Garcia, who
plays the adult version of her
son Jason?
I think he’s kind of boring.
Yeah.
I think you kind of pointed out
later, like if he’s doing an
accent, it’s like really not.
It’s not.
There Australian so like you can
hear him struggle he.
Just sounds like his accent,
like like he’s in California or
something.
Like he sounds like there’s not
much of a like East Coast drawl
in there.
I think he’s OK I.
Think he’s a little boring
though.
Yeah, I do like the part at the
end when he goes when they
finally get to the trailer to
see Ray.
Spoil Yeah.
But I do think he’s really good
in that scene, like his facial
expressions.
But for the most part, I find
his narration like it’s like, I
don’t like about this movie is
like when his narration starts,
I’m like.
Yeah, you know, I’m not super
into it either.
Also, can I admit that when this
movie and Donnie Darker were
filming and like press stuff was
coming out, I would confuse him
and Jake Gyllenhaal because they
were like these brunette boys
who I didn’t know who were doing
these movies with Drew at the
same.
And have baby faces like I I
could see ended up with quite
different careers I’d say so it
is pretty funny but also I I
understand like.
OK, cool.
I was a little embarrassed, but
I was like, I asked.
I’m embarrassed, but I have to
admit it at the same time.
I I get.
I understand it, yeah.
But Drew loved him and she said
he was the most beautiful,
wonderful human being other than
her husband.
It’s just so funny.
I should have put that in there,
of course.
So.
And she felt like this
protective lion over him because
he was her son.
Like she is Bev and this is her
son.
I gave birth to this boy.
Like she really felt it.
It was really funny.
We’re going to talk about the
what 1 Review calls sitcom
broadness.
And that’s one of my problems
with this movie is those moments
really take me out of the
emotions.
But it’s right off the bat.
Like he like turns the vent on
for her and like she falls into
it and then he swerves the car
and it’s just like, why?
I don’t, I don’t know.
I don’t find it funny.
I just find it a little like off
putting.
Yeah.
And I think that is this is a
special penny touch, you know?
Yeah, definitely.
So I believe we’re supposed to
assume at this point that
they’re a couple, right?
Like, would you agree with that?
It’s funny because I didn’t
remember how I would have felt
not knowing what neither it was
about and everything.
But yes, based on like what
happens, I guess so.
Yeah, because like he says, like
in his narration today, I have
to tell her I’m leaving her.
And like when it comes out that
that’s my mother, it’s like this
big reveal and I’m just like me.
That feels a little icky.
I don’t love that.
I don’t like.
I don’t like it either.
Yeah, but I it’s hard to think
about like how from the outside
how I would feel the first time
seeing it or something like you
had an idea.
So yeah, yeah, how could you not
know?
Yeah.
But I don’t like that.
I don’t like that worse.
But I, I know they’re supposed
to be like, oh, she had him so
young, you know, like that’s the
whole, I don’t know why I’m
doing that voice.
No, it’s appropriate.
Did you notice that the line
that she’s looping in dialogue
where she goes OK, OK, you look
like I go alfalfa.
It’s not in there.
But she still like smooths his
hair out so you can tell where
it was supposed to be.
Yes.
So Bev basically asks Jason, I
think, if it’s OK for her to
dedicate the book to him or like
says that she’s dedicating the
book to.
Him.
I don’t think she asks for
permission.
That’s her style.
Does he say he doesn’t want it?
Because I think that’s okay.
Yeah.
So he basically says please
don’t dedicate the book to me.
And regarding this, Drew remarks
that she could relate because
her Mama dedicated a book to
her, which she doesn’t name.
But of course we know it’s
Secrets of World Class Lovers.
And she said that she thought it
was sweet but she didn’t want to
be any part of it.
But the book is dedicated to
her, so it did happen.
Yeah, it’s kind of a fun.
Another weird little parallel.
Yeah, she also said that she
imitated Jade in the way that
she kept applying lipstick in
the in that scene when she’s 36.
And also and how she leans over
when there’s a problem and tries
to like embed herself in your
skin to fix it, which is so
interesting because you can see
Bev like almost like right off
at Jason.
Yeah, that was a fun little
detail to learn there.
All these little Jaid things
that she threw in here.
So like, she doesn’t talk about,
you know, her mom’s mannerisms
much, but so it’s fun to learn
about these.
Yeah, it is.
We we feel like we don’t know
Jaid that well.
Yeah, she’s always some other
person whenever she’s.
Absolutely.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
So the movie goes back in time
to 1965 and Bev is now 15.
It’s kind of funny because I
think the the first scene she’s
only like 11 or 12.
So it’s really not that much
time difference.
Right.
Doesn’t matter.
So the real Bev actually got
pregnant when she was 17, not
And I find it so strange that
they lowered the age.
Like I can’t see any good reason
for it.
It actually makes things harder
in a lot of ways.
Yeah, I don’t, I don’t get it
either.
Unless they were just like 70s
doesn’t feel young enough.
I.
Guess yeah.
I mean, it’s harder for your
actress to like be I mean 15 to
think.
Yeah.
And it like, I don’t know.
It just I don’t know.
It’s just a strange choice.
So we don’t know.
Interesting to learn.
So Bev and her friends, Faye and
Tina, they’re heading to a party
where Bev’s crushed guy is gonna
be.
They’re just teenage girls
having a blast.
And Tina is played by Sara
Gilbert, which is such a fun,
random casting.
And of course, we have Poison
Ivy Reunion there.
Yeah, I was really surprised
Drew didn’t mention it in the
commentary.
I think, ’cause there was so
much going on in the scene, she
just like didn’t address it,
but.
Well, and also Sarah wasn’t
Sarah at the time, she was Tina.
Oh, good point.
She’s like, what’s Poison Ivy?
I’ve I’ve I’m Bev.
I don’t know what that is my
name.
Is Beverly Anne Donofrio.
I’ve never been to California.
Yeah, so there’s a lot that
happens at the party.
Again.
Some of it I don’t really like.
I don’t really like the stuff
with Brittany Murphy’s boyfriend
being so, like, aggressive.
He’s actually like, an
aggressive jerk the entire
movie, and I never noticed it
until I watched it this time
around.
I’m like, this guy sucks.
I guess we’re supposed to think
he sucks eventually anyway.
But yeah, yeah, I don’t really
like.
There’s a lot of like weird
little comedy, like physical
comedy, things that happen.
But we get introduced to Ray, so
he is in the bathroom and you’re
just like, oh, man, this guy,
this part I find very funny.
He’s much more natural, I think.
And he is just this sweet
dumbass dude that, like, finds
birth control in the medicine
cabinet and he takes it and he,
like, hides his beer bottle in
the toilet like he is just a
sweet loser like.
Just a sweet dummy.
Character.
Yeah.
Yeah, I love that introduction
to the character.
Yeah, it’s really good.
Peter Facinelli shows up as
Tommy, who’s like just this
nerdy guy that clearly has a
crush on Drew.
I mean, on Bev, there’s no
difference.
She is Bev and Drew said that
they worked really hard on their
scenes together, and they only
have a couple, so that’s kind of
fun.
Just like, yeah, it’s one of
those things they work together
really hard on.
And then she gives this poem to
her crush Sky, and it really
reminded me of Josie reading her
poem for Billy Prince and just
being humiliated.
Like it’s just.
So sad and it’s awful.
Like the same type of vibes for
sure.
Totally.
All right, we got another Drew
ISM.
This is one of the best.
SO Drew describes how
dramatically Bev would react to
heartbreak.
She said it’s going to wrench
her guts out.
It’s going to take all of her
intestines and braid them
together and pour acid on them.
Only Drew could just come up
with that on the fly.
Pour acid on them.
It’s a really good Drewism,
yeah.
She said that during this scene
she would just stare in the
mirror and repeatedly say sadly
I am a clown over and over and
this is the scene when she’s in
the bathroom after being
humiliated by Sky that.
Made me sad the way she says it
in the commentary too.
She’s a clown.
A clown Drew.
Yeah, actually I feel like
throughout the commentary she’s
like this What the here’s what I
was like thinking and totally
over and over.
So fun.
It’s really neat.
It’s really neat to get that
insight it.
Totally is.
And it totally makes sense to me
that she would start liking Ray
because he like fights this
guy’s sky for her and like, and
he’s making the night exciting
and fun and like she’s 15.
Of course she’s not going to
know that he’s like too much of
A loser for her, even though he
tries to kind of tell her like
don’t get mixed up.
He does he.
Straight up does he does.
OK, so according to the like
real life timeline, Drew says
that this night.
Wait, so like the first night
she met I guess?
So yeah.
Would have been when Beverly got
pregnant.
So literally the night.
Maybe the night she met Ray.
Maybe we should have reread the
book, but it doesn’t really
matter.
Actually, I was going to say
earlier, I’m sure you read the
book before the movie came out
too.
Yeah, but I don’t remember it.
I don’t remember it either.
Yeah.
So neither of us have read it
since like 2001 or two. 1025
years, Yeah, true.
And I guess before this they
just go to a make out spot.
So it’s like.
Ray and Bev and Faye and the
Bobby.
Yes.
Bobby, that’s right.
They go to the make out spot and
I love how you say it’s like
business that’s going on in the
back seat with Bobby and Faye is
just like way over the top.
That’s one of the slapsticky,
over the top, unnecessary
moments.
And I know like, there’s
probably a certain funny, a
certain like demographic of
people who find it funny.
And but to me, I’m like, this is
kind of an important moment and
like, her seat is being pushed
and there’s like pieces of
clothing flying around and it’s
just like, too much for me.
Yeah.
I mean like there’s another like
over the top thing that you
mentioned right after that that
also is like maybe unnecessary.
Yeah, Like, her dad catches her
and they, you know, they get
taken to the police station, I
guess.
And she’s just, like, the
disheveled look that she has is,
like, so over the top.
It’s so over the top.
And, like, one of the cops,
like, whistles at her.
And she’s like, oh, thanks.
And it just feels very strange
because we’re supposed to be
emotional about how she feels so
bad about disappointing her dad.
Like, there’s a really sad shot
when he drops her off at home.
But I’m already like, oh, this.
She gave this whole silly speech
about how she doesn’t do nothing
below the waist, his waist, not
mine.
And it’s like, it’s like one of
those trailer moments.
Yes, there’s just a.
Dissonance in tone.
And I love things that mix
genres.
My favorite things scream Buffy
like they mix genres.
Even Donnie Darko.
So funny.
It’s so funny.
But it’s done well.
What has to be done right?
And like in this movie, the
funny moments just like don’t
feel right to me.
And I know this movie has a lot
of fans who really, really love
it.
So I’m not trying to like, I see
it.
There are things I love about
this movie too.
But I just wish it had like the
reins had been pulled back a
little on some of the goofiness.
Yeah, it does feel like it takes
the air a little bit out of like
some of the scenes that are
supposed to be like weighty.
Yeah, yeah.
Thank you.
That’s.
Perfect.
I mean, maybe we’ll have some
other examples, but this is a
good one.
She’s just been arrested with
her friends because they
basically have been like
whatever publicly indecent or
whatever it is when you’re like
making out in a car in the 60s
and.
She’s like got this relationship
with her dad that like has gone
to shit and she feels horrible.
And this is just like a really
good example of it.
Yeah.
OK, so back to 1986.
So this movie does jump, jump
around.
If you don’t know, we hear and
see pictures of Maggie
Gyllenhaal as adult Amelia when
Jason calls her Amelia’s Fay’s
daughter.
And it’s one of three movies
that Drew and Maggie have done
together.
So it’s Donnie Darko and
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,
all released 2001 to 2002.
And they share no scenes in any,
which that’s a bummer.
You know, like, what are the
odds?
What are the odds for them to do
then never, never appear on
screen together?
Yeah.
Did you love these little Maggie
pictures that they have as
props?
You probably love us.
Right?
So cute.
And again, they’re playing up
this idea that Bev is his
girlfriend.
Like he’s on the phone with
Amelia’s answering machine being
like, I’m going to tell her
about us, that it’s just like,
gross.
Yep.
OK, so let’s get into the
pregnancy reveal.
I just had to note that these
pictures of Drew as teen, Bev
and Brittany as Faye are what I
feel like we’re the first
paparazzi.
Pictures.
I think so.
I think you’re right, because we
didn’t get very many and these
were like on a public street.
So of course, Yep, the paparazzi
found them.
But it was a great like
excitement.
It was.
And I remember thinking like,
what am I looking at?
Like I I do remember thinking
like Drew looked like she was
looking younger.
Obviously I didn’t know.
I don’t think maybe we knew
exactly what it was, but I
remember like not loving the
look.
Well, yeah, her wig in that
scene especially is like, not
very flattering.
It looks much better in the
movie though.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it does.
It does, yeah.
And are we ready to hear Drew
kind of like hamming it up a
little bit?
Oh boy, is she ever.
I had to pull a little bit of it
because it’s just fun also to
hear the accent.
But also here we go of like this
is like the what end of the
world for a teenager because.
I want to die.
I want to die.
I want to be dead.
That’s not too much to ask for.
How am I going to tell my
parents about this?
I can’t even talk to them about
the weather.
How am I supposed to tell them
that I committed a?
A mortal sin.
A mortal sin.
OK, OK.
I know, I know.
I understand OK.
Calm down, we’ll practice.
Yeah, she’s like crossing her
eyes and like, really going to
town with this part.
Yep, A.
Mortal sin.
This is the first time in the
movie that she screams so loud
that it does the thing like in
Mad Love where it’s like.
Oh yeah, you’re right, she
breaks the audio equipment.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, that is what I mean.
She breaks audio equipment.
And this scene with Brittany,
Brittany Murphy yelling, which
is like right after this as as
she’s like as if she’s the
parent of Bev, was used in a
whole bunch of promos and ads.
Like it was like one of these
things that was used.
I don’t really care for it
myself.
Brittany’s awesome.
She’s amazing, but like she’s so
mean.
Like what she says I’m like,
this is so over the top.
Like you would not do this to
your friend.
But it’s, I think it’s used
because because it’s funny.
Because it’s funny, apparently,
Yeah.
Drew said that she watched On
the Waterfront, the movie On the
Waterfront, to prepare for the
scene of telling Ray that she’s
pregnant.
I’ve actually never seen On the
Waterfront.
Yeah, me neither.
I wonder if it was one of the
things she had in the
essentials.
I have a weird feeling it was.
It’s definitely one of those
movies that appears on like
every like, right?
You know you must watch this
list.
Or like she was.
Even saying like, like you guys
are probably like, what the
hell, Why are you comparing
yourself to on the waterfront?
You’re not that good.
But like she said, the vibe of
like at that.
There was a scene in that movie
that was the vibe she wanted to
bring to the scene.
Yeah, she describes like a
specific thing, I think.
And then we have this moment
between Ray and Bev that is
hilariously, I think, sweet and
encapsulates like this moment of
immaturity and, I don’t know,
trying to do the best thing.
Yeah.
Please marry me because I’m shit
without you.
A romantic, A marriage proposal
that contains the word shit.
Again, sorry, sweet dumb ass
loser.
That’s so cute though, yeah.
Yeah.
OK shit without you.
Sorry.
So Faye gives Bev the idea of
maybe she could fall down the
stairs and, you know, like, you
know, something could happen to
the baby.
So there is a different picture
of Baby Drew on the mantle in
this scene, which I can’t even
believe I clocked.
But again, these are photos
we’ve seen before, so I
recognize them.
It’s so funny.
We’ll put some side by sides up
in the episode gallery.
Makes me wonder what else is
there.
I know.
Yeah, you’re right.
The rest are so small.
Penny showed Drew exactly how
she wanted her to fall down the
stairs, and Drew says she just
imitated what Penny did.
She said it hurt, but she it was
fun.
You like this?
I don’t like this.
Well, I I do think Drew’s hammy
face during the scene is funny.
If I were to, like, take it out
of the movie, yeah.
And it was.
Just like her, you know, I don’t
know, I think.
But yeah, I think it feel it’s
dark.
First of all, she’s she’s.
She’s trying to make herself
pregnancy.
And then her parents are
cracking up and she’s cracking
up watching TV.
They don’t see what all what’s
happening like.
I think that.
I think it’s funny.
Her face, There’s one part where
she’s like.
Yeah, that’s, that’s what I
mean, that heavy face where
she’s like opening her eyes all
big and looking over at her
parents.
It is funny, but you’re right.
Like I would like in a different
context maybe?
Right.
Like, I don’t know when you said
like I you like it like kind of
like pointing out like it’s I
don’t know.
But here we are laughing at it
so.
I know.
So maybe we’re talking out of
our asses, I don’t know.
I don’t know.
I think that, I think that we
honestly, I gotta say, I feel
like there’s part of us that
might be tapping into something
about Drew maybe wanting this to
be a serious film and maybe we
like know that.
I think it’s there’s that and
then my own personal
expectation, yeah, when it was
happening was that I thought it
was going to be like her chance
at an Oscar.
And there’s reason I wasn’t like
making that up.
And so I was like, oh.
I think the, yeah, I think the
things that we don’t like about
it are things that didn’t help.
That yeah, yeah.
We have another semi Drewism,
Drew said in the commentary.
I look like a potato there.
I’m so short and squatty.
She’s like, in her jammies.
Yeah, she’s standing on the.
Street.
It did like make her look extra
short.
It was good.
I understood what she meant, but
also totally Weren’t you trying
to make your height shorter?
Yeah.
Success, Drew.
OK, so Bev needs to tell her
parents she’s got to come clean,
so she decides to write a
letter.
And Drew said there’s a clarity
and letter writing that goes
beyond all forms of
communication once again.
Someone.
Sent me a letter.
So we see Bev dropping off this
envelope in the mailbox, and it
is Drew’s actual writing, as I
mentioned.
And you can really tell from
those B’s and those D’s.
It’s so fun.
Love it.
And of course she is Bev.
Of course she’s going to write
it herself.
Like she actually frequently did
this in movies, which, you know,
we always love when we could
notice it.
Like off top of my head, I know
it’s Confessions of a Dangerous
Mind and Full Throttle for sure.
And both of those you can see
she wrote something herself,
which is so nice.
Oh, mad love.
Of course, of course.
OK, so in the kitchen when she’s
talking to her parents after
they’ve read the letter, Drew
said her inner thoughts were, I
am so sick of being 15, which
she also probably had been
playing 15 in this movie for a
while.
For months.
Yeah.
I’m so sick and I think knowing
that it’s it does like, I don’t
know, you look at her face, you
can see that she just like wants
to be like respected and
understood like I want to be an.
Adult she does some I mean,
aside from the the the hammy
faces, she does some really good
subtle faces too.
She does in this movie.
She also, really, again, was
relating to Bev in the scene
because Bev just wanted her
dad’s approval and for him to
say he loved her.
And that’s, you know, very true
to Drew’s in real life.
And this is this.
Yeah.
And then this was when James
Woods off camera said you were
such a nice little girl.
And she just cried buckets.
She said, I know.
And it’s like, yeah, there’s
this like, just interesting
layer of, like, real life and
not real life happening
throughout this whole movie.
Like, James Woods really did
see, she was such a sweet little
girl.
And then she had became a bad
girl.
Like, that’s real.
But also, she’s playing Bev or
you know, it’s just, I get why
this movie is so important to
Drew.
I get why she has such, like,
love friends.
She’s so happy she did it.
She like was almost ended by it.
Yeah, no kidding.
So now we have their wedding.
So of course they were, you
know, this is the 60s, this was,
you know, it was not going to be
OK if they didn’t just go and
do.
Pets and she’s from like a
Catholic Italian family, right?
That those parts.
I’m really, I really do enjoy it
coming from a like very Italian
family, like the whole wedding
scene.
There’s a lot of stuff.
I’m like, oh, my dad would love
this.
Like just the ladies with the
with the food and stuff like
that.
It’s so real.
Great, so we had we’re at their
wedding.
The real life wedding apparently
also had a little paper sign to
like, you know, say where it
was, which is sweet.
They have that like just simple.
You know, a little touch.
Detail and Bev also did wear a
pink dress at the real wedding.
The actor David Moscow plays a
character named Lizard.
He is the young Tom Hanks And
Big, which was also directed by
Penny.
And fun little comes up in the
scene.
Yeah, it’s a fun little thing.
He’s like such a funny
character.
Like, yeah, again, he brings a
little comedy to a scene that I
don’t want, but I also love
like, and I think Ethan Giroud
describes something.
He’s just like this your your
guy’s friend.
I mean, like he’s just always
there and he’s causing problems.
I think she said she’s like a
tick under your skin or
something like.
She does say something like that
about that character.
Yeah.
So there is a really cool
picture that Drew Drew took
during this scene that we saw at
that photo exhibit.
And you pulled it up.
I wouldn’t have remembered this,
but I’m glad you pulled it up.
And it’s taken from the
perspective of where, you know,
Drew as Bev is sitting at the
wedding of her parents dancing.
And it’s really cool to see that
because also she’s taking the
picture as Bev.
I know I was kind of like, you
know, when they see they, the
camera’s on the other side and
you can see Drew back there.
I’m like, was she like hiding
her personal camera, like under
the table?
How did she take this?
She had Chris hand it to her.
Just a really, Yeah, baby.
And the wedding is, I feel like
there’s a lot of like, funny
slapstick stuff happening.
I think it actually, in some
ways it does really work.
Like the thing with the chair,
which I don’t, I don’t know if
you have a note about it, but of
course, yeah, you do have it
later anyway.
So when Bev like sadly watches
her mom and dad and sister, Drew
says why?
Why can’t she be in that group,
which is like was so hard to
like, but but she’s like, she’s
in the head of Bev and she’s
thinking that’s what she would
say and what she yeah, you can.
See it in her face?
She’s just looking over there
like.
Right, this is a fun tidbit.
So the real Bev and Jason are
sitting behind Drew in the scene
and Drew says that they were the
only wedding guest she would
look at.
She didn’t really like want to
make eye contact with anyone
else, which I think is it like,
you know, a teenage pregnant
girl that is kind of tracks.
I mean I don’t know why she
would look at 2 random people
and not anyone else.
But I also think that’s sweet.
That’s like Drew made that
choice and she said that Drew
and Bev would pass each other
notes.
That’s sweet.
Drew said that with this scene,
she kept thinking how you can
get through the worst parts of
your life with your best friend.
And she said that that was key
for Faye and Bev.
And I just had to pull the clip
of Faye has just revealed that
she’s also pregnant.
And I think this is just such a
funny.
I think this toes the line of,
like, ridiculous.
It also feels like something
that a teenage girl would say.
Totally.
Yeah.
We’re going to be pregnant.
Together.
And we’re both going to have
girls and they’re going to be
just like.
Us and I love how the parents
are just sitting there like, Oh
my God, it’s just, it’s worse
and worse.
Yeah, and they, like all look at
each other.
It’s pretty funny.
Yeah, right before that moment,
Faye is giving a speech about
Bev because her dad gives a
horrible, shitty speech that’s
really mean.
And I do love what, like, Ray
gives her a little like, sorry
about that.
Like, shrug.
Like, even he realizes that
wasn’t cool.
So Faye is going to talk about
how beautiful Bev is.
And Brittany said that that
speech was her audition scene.
She she didn’t have to go
through an obstacle course,
apparently.
And she said it was really easy
to do because everybody take a
drink.
Drew really does have that light
inside of her.
And then of course, I’m like,
it’s the chair.
It’s the chair, which you can
barely hear in the movie.
I had to rewind it.
I was like, did I miss it?
Like, why is it so funny to us?
And you can barely hear it.
It’s funny because I I listened
for it so I wonder if I don’t
know if I just knew it was
there.
And I love Drew’s commentary
during this part, when Fay’s
talking about how, you know, no
one sees how beautiful she is.
Drew’s like talking about
herself.
She’s all look at her, looking
at everyone.
Yeah, you don’t see it.
Yeah, like I think as Bev, she’s
thinking it.
You know, totally, yeah.
She’s in the mind of Bev.
So good.
All right, so Ray and Bev are
married and for their wedding
night, they are going to their
brand new house.
So this is kind of cool.
Production designer Bill Groom,
He said that he described this
house as needing to be too small
to contain Bev’s dreams.
So it had to be really small.
So they I think they like built
it on like wheels and you like,
they could pull walls out and
stuff but make it still feel
small.
And the cul-de-sac that the
house is on was built for the
film because they couldn’t find
anything that would fit the
sense of neighborhood that Penny
wanted.
So they built this whole little
St. which is really neat.
And they did it at what was a
closed college called Upsala
College in East Orange, NJ.
So it just had like a lot of
space that they were able to
use.
I know it’s so interesting when
they’re just like, let’s just
build a neighborhood.
I mean, we can’t find what we
want.
We’ll just make it ourselves.
Why not?
Yeah, so Drew decided to be
stiff as a board when Ray’s
trying to, like, carry her over
the threshold, which, again, is
like a goofy part.
But when she said it was to show
that Bev was too freaked out to
go into that house, I was like,
OK, I kind of like that,
actually.
That’s pretty funny.
I always think it’s really
funny, the stiff is a board
thing because I feel like it’s
like, yeah, she’s like so
uncomfortably being lifted by
her, like also teenage
boyfriend.
She’s just like, I don’t know
how to be lifted by someone.
And like, is this romantic?
I feel like she says so many
things, but I like the like
thing of like, yeah, she just
doesn’t want to go with that
house.
Yeah, but she ends up being OK
with it, which is kind of nice.
She said that Bev gets a moment
of lightness and hope here.
She said I actually smiled in
this scene.
Not a toothy smile, but life
might actually be OK.
Yeah.
And I think that like that, this
moment of her going like from
Sirius to like, teenage
excitement is really sweet.
Close your eyes.
OK.
Very few people in my life have
ever treated me as good as you
do, and that’s got to mean
something good, right?
And tonight I just have this
amazing feeling like
everything’s going to be OK and.
I’m done.
I’ll run.
Home.
I’ll run home, right?
It’s going to be done.
For Ray, he goes from like, what
is this freaky thing you’re
making me do with closing my
eyes and you’re getting all
serious, but oh, it’s OK, You
like it.
OK, great.
But I like how she’s like, she’s
also like, I’m done.
Like I’m done talking.
She’s like, of course Bev has to
make it all dramatic and say
close your eyes and all this
stuff.
Yes, we see Bev super pregnant
babies come in.
Drew in the commentary describes
herself seeing herself super
pregnant like this and says,
look at this whale.
There she is sitting like an
angry beached whale with a
cigarette.
And we always thought that was
so funny.
I don’t think it’s like nice
that she’s calling this pregnant
woman a beach whale.
But also it’s funny because
like.
Just because of how she delivers
it.
And she looks.
Yeah.
And the character, like, as Bev,
she looks so, like, miserable,
mad.
Yeah.
OK, so here’s this.
And in this scene, we have the
first indication that Ray is
going to be a problem.
He comes home late for her
doctor’s appointment and he’s
drunk.
Drew said that Bev was showing
off to her mom here by being
tough.
Yeah, like, watch, watch, watch
me fight him.
See.
Yeah, Drew loved the thoughts
that went through Bev’s head.
Like get off my back.
Like just like so.
Much waddling around.
And this is a sweet moment.
So Drew said that when Bev’s
water breaks, Drew screams mom.
And she said it was, like, from
her gut, she was calling out to
her real mom, who couldn’t hear
her.
Yeah.
But like, I can imagine that.
I mean, I have never had a baby.
But, like, if you’re trying to
tap into, like, who you would
want the most, who you would
like.
I don’t know.
Yeah, and as Bev, she’s trying
to figure out, I don’t.
Know she’s Bev slash herself
slash jade slash Jason.
Slash.
All of them.
Yeah, Penny’s actual daughter,
Tracy Reiner, who also was born
when Penny was a teen, plays the
nurse in the scene.
It’s a cute little.
Moment I didn’t I totally didn’t
realize that she was adopted by
Rob Reiner when she married
Penny.
Like I I didn’t know that.
That was pretty wild.
And then, like, I guess I kind
of knew they were together, but
I also had a moment of like, oh,
what?
I forgot.
Yeah, That’s interesting.
Yeah.
You noted here that like they
play the scenes with the newborn
in a really funny way.
Yeah, again, it was like such a
trailer moment.
Like I didn’t have a the way I
had a girl, like, and then she
starts crying, but I’m like,
this is a 15 year old who just
gave birth.
Like, this should feel
traumatizing.
Like she’s upset her dad won’t
even come and say hi to her.
That was rough, too.
And like Drew said, it was one
of the hardest scenes for her to
do because of Bev’s reaction.
And it felt raw and embarrassing
and awkward.
Like, Drew is not playing for
laughs here.
I think she’s playing it
seriously, but.
And it’s not like it’s cut that
way.
Yeah.
And it’s like, it’s yeah, it’s
not.
It’s not funny.
Yeah.
It.
Shouldn’t be funny.
It’s not funny.
But I mean, I guess, I guess the
thing that, OK, it’s funny how I
can go to in my head to go like,
oh, it is funny subjectively.
Yeah, Now that’s why I’m glad
that we’re doing this, though,
because I don’t want to shit on
this movie.
And I like when we have
differing opinions.
You know, I think it’s more
interesting for people to like,
I like, like when I’m
complaining about her hair in
Santa Clarita Diet, you’re like,
well, maybe it’s because of this
reason.
It’s like, oh, now I feel a
little different definitely
about it.
Thank you.
You know.
Yeah, like I was just going to
say like this part when it’s
like, oh, you know, she she was
going to grow up to be just like
me.
And then like then, you know,
Ray says, well, now they’re
going to grow up to be just like
me.
And that’s what makes Bev just
like, oh, no, like what did I
do?
That’s funny.
But it’s also, it’s like
unnecessary and I don’t know.
Yeah, let’s just be there with
like this poor girl who is not
happy about being a mom.
Like this is important.
I you know, I wonder thinking
about this, like if this movie
was played straight, maybe it
would just be way too.
Depressing.
Sad.
Yeah.
Like if it wasn’t true, you
know, sort of like what the
lightness that it brings because
it’s Drew, like what Bev was
saying, maybe like that extra,
like there’s that release that
happened because you laugh.
But we know that’s important to
Drew to have like the humor,
which we do on this podcast all
the time.
But there’s just something about
the tone that like.
Maybe irks me.
Yeah, I think we, I think we
both have the same.
We understand the need, but we
don’t think the execution.
Yeah.
You know, I don’t know.
So we get a little montage of
Bev, like getting her working on
her high school degree and she’s
working towards a scholarship.
Again, it’s not like super
blatant.
You just kind of keep seeing her
doing like, school work.
Yeah, Jason’s growing up.
We get another trailer moment.
That’s the baby pees in her
mouth.
Oh yes.
Music.
And it’s just like, oh God.
I did think it was funny though.
In the movie she says he peed in
my mouth.
But in all the ads she just
goes, it went in my mouth.
So I guess apparently saying pee
in my mouth was too racy for
commercials.
So weird.
That is funny.
And then she’s, like, brushing
her tongue furiously and she
gags on the toothbrush as a
tribute to Nancy Juvonen’s dad,
Bill Juvonen.
Apparently, he used to brush his
teeth and tongue very
aggressively and always be
gagging.
And then it was like a a thing
in the family that everyone
knew.
What a funny like tribute.
I love that though.
Yeah.
All the little moments with Ray
and toddler Jason are very
sweet.
Again, he’s Ray has a good
heart.
Like he’s not a bad person.
He just makes really poor
decisions and it’s just sad when
you know where everything’s
heading.
The the, the storyline of Ray
and Jason is actually probably
tugs at my heartstrings even
more than Bev in a lot of ways.
Like those are the scenes that
actually made me cry more so
than like Jason and Bev.
Maybe because you’re like, I
don’t know, in the mind of the
kid, you’re like, he has fun
with Dad.
Yeah, yeah.
And again, let’s just like, it’s
just really sad.
We’ll we’ll get to those
moments.
There are a lot of scenes in the
trailer that are either extended
or like variations of what we
see in the movie.
And I started noticing a lot of
them, which.
And I think there are some
strange editing choices in this
movie.
And you just kind of wonder,
like, oh, what if they had used
this version instead?
But there’s a cute little moment
where Bev is like on a blanket
doing schoolwork.
And we see it very quickly in
the movie.
But in the trailer, like, Jason
and Ray are there with her, and
it looks like they’re all having
fun.
So kind of weird to think about.
Maybe it’s the time thing.
So interesting how that stuff
goes.
So now we have Drew getting
ready.
Drew Bev getting ready for.
The same person.
For Drew Bev, getting ready for
the scholarship meeting that she
is, she’s hoping to get a
scholarship for school.
And the little actor Logan
Aaron’s is so cute.
You make this and he is so cute,
so cute.
And his brother Cody takes over
the role soon.
So the reason that they look so
much alike is because they’re
brothers.
So much alike I missed the.
Transition yeah no yeah cuz I
had her hair is like almost
exactly the same too.
Pretty wild and they both act as
adorably as each other.
They’re both great little
actors.
Yeah, they are watching her get
ready.
So cute.
Yeah, and I always loved her
sophisticated hair and outfit,
but like, look where she.
I always like that for some
reason.
I me too.
It looks really good on her.
I think it’s cute how they have
like the tape over the little
curls while she’s getting ready,
like all the little touches.
Yeah.
That’s see, that’s a great
little touch that is funny and
not a like kind of way.
Yeah, yeah.
And I think the Hairspray bit,
which apparently was like an ad
Lib by Drew, I think that’s
really funny too, because it
feels like an absent minded
mother, like yes, spraying her
Hairspray when the kid is
standing right there and not
thinking to close her eyes and
mouth and then coughs and end up
in the trailers.
Like Drew is so proud of that.
I think that works.
I think that works because it’s
like it feels like something
that absent minded mother would
do.
So Drew’s favorite line in the
movie is like, right in the
scene.
And she’s getting ready and
she’s she says, Mommy’s going to
do something that’s going to
change the rest of our lives,
which is a sweet scene.
But like, that moment also feels
very, like, cheesy.
I don’t know.
I love that Drew loves it.
But like, yeah, it is.
You know, you’re right.
Right before filming the scene
with Ray, Drew said that she sat
in the taxi thinking, I’m going
to freak out on this person for
not believing in me the way I’ve
had to believe in myself.
And she said it was devastating
that he didn’t try to empower
her, instead took her power
away.
Like Ray doesn’t show up to take
care of Jason so she has to
bring him to the meeting and it
ruins her chances and Ray’s just
like whoops.
Just like I forgot.
Yeah.
I woke up this morning truly
believing that by this afternoon
my life would be different, not
only because it was my dream,
but because I earned it.
And now look at me, it’s 4:00 in
the afternoon and I’m just
another angry housewife yelling
at her husband on the lawn.
In front of the entire
neighborhood.
Yeah, that’s me.
Wonderful.
Thank you, Ray.
She probably hurt her throat
yelling like that.
She sounds genuinely mad.
I do think that they were trying
to make it be somewhat funny.
There are well, like lizards
moments in this scene.
Take Me Out of it ’cause like,
and this was always used in like
the trailers and the clips as a
comedic thing.
But I think Drew’s playing it
totally straight.
I don’t think she was trying to
be funny in this scene at all.
And it’s devastating what just
happened to her.
Like her dreams just totally got
ripped out away from her and
she’s stuck in this life that
she doesn’t want.
I mean, I think that I when I
was thinking about not pulling
this clip because I was like,
I’m so tired of hearing that
same clip.
Yeah.
Angry half white housewife on
the lawn, you know, yeah, but
I’m like, actually it’s a true
frustration and feel like I
think it actually it could like
somewhat correctly illustrates
how angry she is and that she’s
like, and I earned it.
She’s really fucking mad.
Yeah, and it’s something about
listening to the audio outside
of watching it in the movie, I
felt I felt it more, it was more
effective, weirdly.
I think I was really listening
to her voice this time.
She said it was hard because she
wanted to be right on the verge
of tears doing this but too mad
to actually cry and she she
nailed it.
Yeah, and I think that she, her
expressions in this movie like
of anger and like they really
come off.
She really looks mad.
Yeah.
And and like, I don’t know,
disappointed and.
They also like cut to little
Jason.
Like you can tell he’s feeling
really scared, like his mom is
screaming like this.
That’s what I there’s like
trauma happening.
But then we also have like
lizard being like, yeah, should
I have left?
And it’s like it’s just a
dissonance that I don’t.
Well, I actually, I think, I
think some of it works because I
feel like it’s supposed to show
you they’re kind of just like
young, like, you know, ’cause I
feel like Ray often comes off
kind of like, I didn’t know,
like the whole like I forgot,
like it feels.
It feels like it feels.
Kind of real.
That’s what I was going to say.
And I actually feel like I, I
wouldn’t be surprised if someone
like Lizard would be like, you
know, they’re just trying to
like again, like diffuse the
situation.
I don’t know.
So some of that stuff works even
though it’s like jarring, I
don’t know.
Interesting.
OK, everybody, if you notice, we
sound a little different for the
rest of this episode.
We had so much to say.
We had to come back another day.
So it’s a couple days later and
we’re continuing.
Here you go.
Well, you know.
Well, basically, we’re doing a
time jump just like this movie’s
about to do.
We are.
We’re just trying to be really
authentic guys.
Yeah.
So we are moving forward in time
by a few years.
And these are kind of my
favorite parts of the movie.
You know, I’ve made it very
clear.
I don’t really like the hokey
humor.
This is where we get to, like,
things are just much more subtle
here.
I feel like the whole movie in
general, but also Drew’s acting
as she matures as Beverly,
everything’s just a little more
like realistic feeling, which is
just sort of my preference for
this particular film.
And I also love that Drew has
her real hair.
I think it just looks better,
you know, than the wig scene, of
course, Beverly.
So I’m excited to like to get
through some of these scenes and
talk about our notes.
Yeah.
And I think that like when she
alludes in the commentary to
like how she acted differently
at the different ages.
Like I feel like she said
something like, this is around
my age, so I’m basically acting
like myself a little bit more.
So we’re like, it does feel more
like Drew.
Even though she’s.
Putting on this accent, you
know, like an extent.
Attitude.
She’s still like.
Yeah, it’s not her personality
wise, but like her way of
speaking.
You know, I think that the way
she played teenage Beverly is
was like, you know, of course,
hyper emotional and like, you
know, all of those things and
then out, like out right about
it.
I don’t know.
OK, yeah.
I guess I wanted to say that
like the one of the first things
they show when they do the time
jump is her working in a
restaurant in this like pink
outfit.
And I was like, I don’t even
recognize that.
Like right away.
I was like, no, I don’t.
I mean it’s a pretty quick
scene, but like once they show
the girls like the bitches from
school, like coming up and like
ordering from her.
I was like, oh, I do remember
that.
I just didn’t remember drews
like pink outfit.
How could I miss it?
And he’s.
Like really cute the.
Earrings almost look like like
Star Trek logo.
I see that a little bit. 60s
graphic yeah, I love that good
catch.
There are again, I’ve mentioned
this before, but there are and I
just had put this in our notes
for you to see like there are so
many moments in the trailer that
are like variations of what ends
up in the film.
So there’s like 1 here when she
I know there’s one here where
Bev and Jason go over to Fay’s
house.
So just watch for those if you
guys are interested, we’ll link
to the original trailer in our
notes and you can just see like,
oh, that’s not in the movie.
That’s one of the movie.
It’s kind of fun, which also.
Means that like the delivery in
that is a little different,
right?
Like it’s so kind of cool.
Like it’d be, it’d be
interesting to put like somebody
do this, somebody put like all
those lines side by side.
There are, like, some strange
editing choices in this movie
that I’m going to comment on in
a little while.
And like, yeah, it’d be
interesting.
Like, this could have looked
very different, maybe.
Who knows?
Definitely.
I also feel like in the Wedding
Singer trailer don’t they also
use like a more angry version of
one of his deliveries?
Maybe not.
Possibly.
I don’t know, I feel like maybe
that like one of the.
I have a microphone.
And you don’t?
Yeah.
I don’t know if it’s that one
anyway, but yeah, it’s it’s
always interesting to see those
differences and editing choices
are what make this movie not.
Perfect.
Yeah.
Yeah, it’s OK.
Great.
Great point.
OK, so we get this really, you
know, it’s important scene to
Drew, and I’ll tell you why, but
this is Bev and Faye, and
they’re going to do some drugs,
and Faye’s mom is supposed to
take the kids to the movies.
And you know, Bev shows up in
her work outfit and she wants to
change it to comfy clothes, so
she pulls out a tie and puts on
a tie belt.
And I was like, I totally forgot
about.
That me too.
Yeah.
And it made me so excited
because when Drew kind of
brought the tie belt back this
summer, yeah, I was like, OK,
there’s that one, like in the
blue outfit paparazzi picture we
always think of.
But I was like, I know there’s
more.
Like what?
There definitely are.
Yeah, it was our best one.
This one I was forgetting for
sure, so that was just a.
She did it out a few times, like
casually, like, not at events.
And then, like you said on her
show where she was talking like,
being an homage to her father.
Yeah.
So I love that.
This had to have been her idea,
right?
Had to be, I love.
This little tie around your
waist.
You all know the little tie.
I love that that turquoise pop
is popping.
Do you know what this is?
Is it a real tie?
My father would wear ties as
belts, and so in honor of him,
I’m bringing it to the season.
Thanks, Dad.
Thanks, Dad.
It’s also kind of funny that
maybe they don’t know about the
real story about her dad and
they’re like.
Oh, that’s how cute.
Your dad’s like, he’s kind of
eclectic.
That’s an understatement.
OK, so you mentioned they were
like, doing drugs.
Faye’s mom is supposed to take
both of the kids but only takes
Amelia because I forget what the
reason is.
She’s mad at Bev.
Yeah, cuz Bev like is high and
starts saying like things to
her, yeah.
Yeah, So Jason ends up having to
stay back with them.
And this scene is, it’s pretty
traumatic because Jason falls
into the hot tub while they’re,
like, distracted.
Faye and Bev are really
distracted, just kind of hanging
out.
They catch it pretty quickly,
like they hear it.
And you know, in the movie, Bev
very quickly resolves the
situation, but the scene was
super important to Drew because
this chapter in the book that
inspired it was one of the most
extraordinary things she’d ever
read, she said.
Yeah, we should have read it.
Damn it.
Sorry.
We did a lot of prep, but we
didn’t do that.
Yeah, we should have reread it.
So in the commentary at this
point because Bev is telling
Jason to like, go away right
before this happens.
And she’s like drew a saying in
the commentary.
Bitch.
Such a bitch is that I mean she
and she is like Bev is like
really, you know, Drew as Bev is
putting on a very stern like
doesn’t give a shit face like
just get.
Go away.
Yes, and Drew says it was such a
hard thing for her to treat this
like adorable little boy that
way.
Like, of course, of course.
That was probably like
heartbreaking.
I’m sure she gave him the
biggest like oh good cuddle
after.
You know it.
Unless she didn’t because she’s
Bev.
Oh, that’s right.
She’s not Drew.
She can’t do that.
She’s Bev.
Goodness, I wonder what she
actually did.
Drew explains that the near
drowning was a turning point
where Bev realizes she’s a
terrible mother and that she
really like, wants to, and needs
to turn shit around.
Yeah, makes sense.
OK, so we get this scene right
after this that this is one of
my weird editing complaints
because this scene is so clearly
supposed to come after what
comes next.
Jason’s birthday party.
Drew is wearing the same top
except it looks purple.
But I’m like, maybe that’s a
lighting thing.
It really looks purple though.
Hair, belt, earrings,
everything’s exactly the same.
And then I realized that Jason
is wearing the same pajamas that
we see him wearing after the
birthday party after the
birthday party.
So and like it makes sense too.
Like she he’s looking at his
this pictures of his dad and she
comes in and says I want you
know I love you after he like
caught her outside with this
other guy.
Like it’s so clearly, it’s a
very strange, like I don’t even
know why they included it if
they weren’t going to.
Put it in the right.
Maybe something about the tone
shift, I don’t know.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Maybe to show like, oh, she’s
going to try harder here.
She she wants him to know that
she loves him.
Yeah, I guess so.
But continuity reasons.
It feels so strange.
It is strange and it’s strange
that the shirt looks like a
different color.
Maybe they maybe they recolored
it.
They’re like, oh, she’s
obviously wearing the same
outfit.
Let’s make it purple.
My God.
Crazy.
It is crazy.
OK, so we get Jason’s birthday
party.
I like this scene a lot.
I like the, like, just the
busyness of it and the people
everywhere.
It feels very real.
It’s got that neighborhood feel
that Penny was going for.
Yeah.
It’s really hard to see, But I
was like, oh, I, I can almost
tell that that’s Drew’s
handwriting on this card that
Bev gives to Jason and that.
And I was like, and I would
totally track because she is Bev
if she has to write this.
And she does confirm in the
commentary that she did make the
card herself.
Also, that’s really cute.
Wonder where that is?
Now, yeah, hopefully it’s,
hopefully it’s in like an
archive or something.
I hope so.
That’s cool, I mean.
Ours, that kind of stuff, You
say it should be in ours.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I love that in the like
screenshot you took that you
like zoomed in, you can see it’s
her handwriting.
Like, yeah, if you know.
If you know, you know.
Yeah, exactly so.
Nerdy little Tommy from the
beginning of the movie at the
party comes in and he’s not
looking so nerdy anymore.
And I, I love both Drew and
Brittany Murphy’s like faces
like they’re acting.
They were the reaction to his
glow up.
I wrote like, yes, they’re like,
oh, hello.
It’s kind of, it’s very like,
silly, but it works.
But it’s like, you wouldn’t
really do that, like, right to
that person, you know?
I mean, not would.
Maybe you would in the next,
like in this next part.
Is this like while the birthday
party’s happening?
I guess I didn’t like, realize
it’s like right outside.
That’s the neighborhood thing,
too.
Yeah.
It’s very like convenient that
all these people just show up.
Right.
So Bev has like major FOMO over
Tina’s life.
So her friend from school,
played by Sara Gilbert, comes
over just kind of like on like.
She’s like leaving town.
Yeah.
And she is like, has this
totally opposite life than Bev.
She has no children.
She’s in love like, about like,
I don’t know if she’s like,
married, but she’s moving to New
York and she’s going to go to
NYU.
And this is like this is Bev’s
dream.
Yeah.
I mean, not The Who knows what
she thought about having kids,
but going to school, going to
New York, leaving this like
town, like those are all, you
know, I.
Think we know what she thought
about having kids trick.
It’s pretty clear.
That’s true.
So Drew said that the storyline
was was dear to her heart and
made her realize that the street
Bev lived on was like just one
exit because it was like a
literally a circle at the
cul-de-sac at the end.
And she felt like that was very
metaphorical, like there’s only
one way out of this situation.
Like I don’t know, it’s not a
through St.
Yeah, I like that.
Yeah, it’s a very, it’s a very
like Drew observation to me.
Absolutely, yeah.
So I think, and this could maybe
play into why that scene is
shifted.
Yeah, there was originally a
scene here and we.
All we’ve seen is like the
behind the scenes footage where
Bev is outside yelling, freaking
out at Ray, who’s driving away
on a motorcycle.
So I’m I’m like, oh, I kind of
wish this was here.
Like, I’m glad Jason had this
nice birthday and he’s standing
there looking sad.
So I don’t want that for him,
you know?
But I’m also like regularly got
high in the bathroom at the
party.
Like something must have
happened here that she’s like,
you know, chasing him outside.
So interesting.
Just again, one of those little
like this could have been a
little different, huh?
Yeah, totally.
So later that night, Bev is just
sitting outside, Drew said.
She was sitting there thinking,
I’ve screwed my life up.
I got to get this right.
I got to get out and Tommy is
still just hanging around.
I was like, is he just like
stalking Bev?
He.
Clearly is very interested in
yeah talking more to her.
And Drew’s mindset was that Bev
was intrigued by Tommy, you
know, not as like a crush so
much, but because he believes
that she’s a smart person who
deserves whatever life she can
get for herself.
And Ray is not.
Providing that in any way right
and we get this moment where
they were to me, they’re fully
kissing.
It looked like the scene cuts in
and they’re pulling apart
because Jason comes running up.
But like, I’m like, if it had
lingered one second earlier, we
would have seen they were
kissing, right?
And then.
I think so.
That’s it with him.
He never goes anywhere.
I mean, I know he’s supposed to
represent this opportunity that
she’s going to go to California
and have a, you know, go to
school in a different life for
herself.
But it is kind of weird how it’s
like, oh, they just kissed and
that’s just like, erased.
Yeah, it totally.
It totally looks like it.
If nothing else, they were at
least like holding each other
close because it when it cuts
like into it, it’s like they’re
getting closer.
And then when it cuts out, it
really is like not shown, but
it’s like a sniff.
Yeah, yeah.
It’s like it’s sniffed like the
half a second like you said.
Yeah, exactly.
But the whole going to
California thing was important
because it gives Bev this
temporary sense of hope.
And we see this over and over
for her, like, but maybe I can
make this thing happen.
Oh my gosh.
And then of course, right.
Ruins it.
You know, it’s just sort of the
pattern.
Right.
So now we get into this whole
part of the movie where we’re
finding out that Ray is
literally a junkie.
Yeah.
So they had this plan to go to
California for like, it was such
a short amount of time, like.
I can’t tell again, I think.
I think they were literally
trying to go at the same time as
Tommy was going to leave.
OK, so like that night they
started packing.
So the next morning is when this
happens because she’s in the
same clothes.
Yep, I think that’s what it’s
supposed to be.
When you pointed that I was
like, well, I think they were
like really trying to be like
let’s go now, OK.
The music is like suddenly
uplifting as she like runs to
her parents house cuz do they
like let her know that Ray’s
there and she needs to?
Go, they call.
Yeah, yeah, they said Ray’s
here.
You need to come over here.
OK.
And they don’t explain, they
just say like come over now.
So as you’d be running over
there and the music totally
sounds like wrong, like the
score doesn’t really.
Exciting.
It’s like, no, this is horrible.
But I think, I wonder if it’s
because we don’t know.
If you’re watching it for the
first time, maybe you don’t know
anyway.
Like it could have been been
more of like a anxious music, I
don’t know.
At least when she got closer or
something.
I don’t know.
So Drew said that Bev was
slightly disgusted by her dad
helping Ray since she could
never go to him with problems.
Like, she felt like she had to,
like, deal with a lot of stuff
herself, and that he was helping
Ray in a way that, like, she
doesn’t feel like he would have
helped her.
I don’t know if that’s true, but
she definitely felt like that.
Yeah.
Steve actually made notes for
himself on a piece of paper and
it was his idea to have Ray in
the the need to like read from
the paper and I love that.
Yeah, it’s a great touch.
Feels very much like Ray, like
totally.
He’s such a like, gentle,
nervous, not that well spoken,
you know, person.
And he really wanted it to be
right.
Oh, yeah.
I just think this is like, I
think this in the ending scene
is where he really like, you
just feel for him.
His his performance is so great.
And I really like that this
particular scene with the dad
and him and Bev is played
straight.
There is no joking around in
this scene.
Like he’s a heroin addict.
And the dad is basically like
telling her what to do about it,
you know, kind of trying to take
charge.
I can’t do it without a thing.
Please don’t go crazy when you
hear this, but I regret to
inform you that I am a junkie.
I spent all of our money on
heroin.
I spent everything.
I even spent the money for
Jason’s aspirin on a fix.
It’s just a tiny fix, but what?
But I I spent that too.
Heroin.
I knew you drank a lot, but
heroin?
Jesus Ray, For how long?
No.
For.
How long?
Two years.
October 31st, Halloween night.
Remember when Jason was a
monkey?
I think he, Steve Zahn was like
perfectly cast and I think that
he played, he did, he must have
done everything as he would the
way that Penny wanted, You know,
like because I feel like he
seems he is Steve Zahn.
Like he doesn’t seem, I don’t
know what I was going to say.
He seems.
Natural.
I kind of think I.
I’m following yeah.
It seems more like this is his
performance, not Penny saying do
it just like this exactly yeah
yeah, yeah.
And I also think like even
listening to that scene right
now my heart aches for him a
little yeah.
Which I think is really
important because he’s not like
a.
He’s a bad guy, but he’s not
like a villain, like he’s just a
screw up like his right?
He’s a sweetheart.
He’s just can’t be a dad, you
know?
And I think it’s good that we
have like a positive feeling
about him in some way, despite
everything that he did.
Yeah, totally.
So Bev decides, you know, she’s
going to take care of this
herself.
She doesn’t want her parents
help, that he’s going to detox
and she’s going to help him.
And this is tough.
This is tough.
It’s like very, very traumatic
what happens in the scene.
But there’s also like, laughter
in it.
But like again, I’m getting that
dissonance some of this.
Actually some of it works.
Yeah, but.
It is dissonance is the right
word, but I also feel like maybe
there’s intentionality behind
that too.
And that’s like Ray reacting
literally to like.
No that song.
You know, yeah, see, I’m
laughing.
But like, when you imagine this
as a real thing that’s happening
with this little boy’s dad
screaming in the other room
while he detoxes, like that is
not funny in any way, shape or
form.
But anyway, so you know, Bev is
going to try to be the hero.
She wants to come in, distract
Jason from the horrifying
reality in the other room.
That’s Drew’s words.
And so she puts on this
Cincinnati dancing pig.
Is that what it’s called?
I think.
So and I’ve I love that we get
her famous booty dance that I
know she has said she does for
Nancy Juvonen.
Like what do you mean right now?
Like this is how I’m going to
cheer you up.
So I kind of love it.
That’s that’s the real Drew
coming through there.
Yeah, totally.
And she said in the commentary
that she loved all of these
honest moments that she got to
have as Bev when she was like,
grossed out or annoyed or hates
something that’s going on where
she’s just like, God, you know,
that’s not true, like, all the
time.
I was just going to say
something that I remembered
about something in the detox
scene before we move on.
So there’s there’s like one part
where Ray like throws up on the
bed and she’s like, this is so
gross.
She says the same thing when her
water.
Breaks.
I noticed that, yeah, I think.
That almost in the same
inflection too.
Like it’s funny.
I think, I hope it’s intentional
because it’s like, yeah, she’s
still the same girl who’s just
like, why am I being dealt these
scars?
Yeah, totally.
There is a brief little like
there must have been an extended
scene where she wakes up the
next morning.
And I really love how she plays
that scene too.
And she finds out, you know,
Jason’s like bringing our cereal
and she finds out that Ray is
gone.
And in the trailer you see her
get super angry and like, kick
this inflatable toy across the
room.
And Oh yeah.
I would have liked to have that
moment, like, why are you?
Why do you do that?
Maybe just time.
This movie is very long.
It is actually it’s over 2 hours
which I was like planning to
watch it and like trying to fit
in.
I was like oh shit like a
multiple times I forgot how long
who.
Was it?
I’m so sorry to whoever it was
that I’m not remembering right
now, but somebody had commented
to us, like, imagine if this had
been in the day of limited
series and if this had been like
a six episode or even like a
three episode series.
Like how much more that we could
have gotten into that?
Would have worked so much
better.
Too.
Yeah, wouldn’t that be
interesting?
And it could have been done
like, you know, like each
episode is an era.
Yeah, yeah.
So that’s kind of a cool
thought.
I’m so sorry.
I can’t think of who said that
right now, but whoever you are,
you’re brilliant.
That’s such an interesting idea.
Yeah.
You know, there’s a point where
is talking to Ray about, like,
wishing he could be just like a
businessman kind of thing.
And Drew said she related to,
like, that, you know, comparison
because she once dealt with a
lawyer to help take care of her
dad.
And she said that this man just
looked so responsible in his
suit and tie.
And she thought, my dad hasn’t
worn shoes in 40 years.
So she like compared this like
it’s just not, you know, that’s
not Ray.
Like, why can’t you just be like
a responsible person?
Like, it’s just not who you are.
Yeah, right.
Yeah.
And then there’s just this, like
genuinely heartbreaking this is.
Such a sad scene.
So Ray’s going to leave because
he.
Yeah, I like when he’s like,
maybe I’ll just do a little bit.
And she’s like, you want my
permission to do a little bit of
heroin for the rest of our
lives?
Like, what are you talking
about?
That is a.
Funny line, but funny quote UN
quote.
Yeah, but that’s like the right
funny.
Yeah.
And so he’s going to leave and
his scene saying goodbye to
Jason again, like huge props to
Steve’s on and this little this
one.
This one is Cody Aaron’s.
Oh God this got me like I was
crying from the smart it was so
sad.
Jason, you cannot go with him.
Dad, wait.
Dad.
I.
Want to go with you?
Jason?
Wait, Dad.
Jason, take me with you.
You’re mad now, but you’ll see
that we wouldn’t have had a
chance unless I did this.
Leave me alone.
Leave me alone If you will just
get out of the street, then I’ll
leave you alone.
But remember, I am your mother,
and that means you’re not
allowed to stay mad at me.
Like everything about it is
heartbreaking.
Also, not to take us out of it,
but something that the way that
Drew says your mother is reminds
me of something from Ever After.
Oh, interesting, You were the
only mother that I’ve ever
known.
Thanks.
I needed that release because
I’m.
I was literally crying like when
he goes and grabs his little
toothbrush.
Oh God, that little actor.
Wow, he’s so phenomenal.
My comment that I wrote about
this was little Henry Thomas
like heartbreak because like the
way his if you guys know when or
in the audition tape for ET,
Henry Thomas is heartbreakingly
like heart wrenchingly, Oh my
God, wonderful.
It is like that.
Oh my God.
But anyway that kid is amazing.
That scenes amazing and I had to
pull 2 to like see Drew as Bev
and Bev is being so like selfish
in that moment.
Yeah, also she’s, you know.
Oh, because she’s like, you
can’t be mad at me, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
She did a really hard thing.
But then she’s like.
But yeah, expecting this kid to
understand it, Yeah.
Exactly.
Heartbreaking.
Drew said that everything in her
actual life changed in this
moment.
She said that she could finally
see things as an adult,
obviously seeing her mom’s side
of not having Drew’s dad around,
like she started to kind of like
have this perspective of like
her mom had to do a very similar
thing.
Basically get out to Drew’s dad
for not that he was a fun guy,
like, you know, but you know,
but she she like had some
perspective that was like on the
side of the child and the side
of the mom that was like, whoa,
a weird flip for her.
It the parallels are just crazy.
It’s kind of amazing.
I made one quick little note
here.
It’s not that important, but we
get like this.
I think this is the only scene
with Amelia, right?
So this is like actual on
screen.
It’s not just her voice.
And her and Jason are on a phone
call.
And I never noticed it before,
but I think her voice actually
sounds quite a bit like Brittany
Murphy’s in this scene.
And I was like, oh, that’s cute.
Like I am buying her as her
daughter.
Like I see it.
I just thought that was nice.
I mean, that’s probably, that’s
got to be intentional, but it
also like sounds like Maggie.
So maybe just like the way that
they talk is similar anyway.
They have like a a squeakiness
to their voice, both of them.
I was noticing.
It’s cute.
Yeah.
Yeah.
OK, so Jason, we’re doing
another time jump here.
Jason is now age 8, and he’s
played by Logan Lerman, who is a
big, huge heartthrob.
Did you know that these days I
only.
Do that because he was on Drew’s
show at some point.
Oh, he was.
He was.
Linette pointed it out to me
like I think she like, sent me a
text and was like, this is the
kid who played, who was in
writing Cars with Boys.
And I’m like, what?
Because I’d seen this guy
before, had like no connection
at all.
He looks so different.
He looks really different, but
he also like kind of looks the
same.
I think he’s cuter now than he
was as a kid.
Like he’s a little awkward.
Kid is amazing.
It’s also like Drew for a second
in the commentaries, like Logan.
Is it Logan?
Yeah, they’re both Logan.
Yeah, I know that two of the
kids that played her kid are
Logan.
Yeah, that is so funny.
But anyway, it’s the heartthrob
thing.
I sort of knew, but I was
surprised when I learned.
To yeah, I went and looked at
his Instagram, which I linked
here and I was like, OK.
Yeah, OK.
I see.
So in this scene, this is when
Drew has her little Dorothy
look.
I always thought of it as a
Dorothy look, totally blue apron
and her brown braids.
But Drew points out that you can
see Bev writing like she’s
sitting at a table in the
kitchen and she’s writing, and
it’s really subtle and it’s
never discussed, but she’s like,
you have to start showing that
she’s a writer.
Like, she’s a writer and Lizard
is of course there.
I think this is our final Lizard
scene causing.
Oh, no, it’s not.
He’s going to cause way more
problems.
What am I talking about?
Yeah.
And he he’s trying to give Jason
like a color TV that he probably
stole.
And anyway, it starts this whole
fight between Jason and Bev.
And Drew points out that this
argument is the argument of a
married couple, not a mother
son.
Unless I have to do everything
around here, I have to shop,
cook, clean and do the laundry,
I never get to play.
Yeah, neither do I I go to night
school, and when you work a
double shift, I have to use the
spare time to sleep and wash the
sweat off.
OK, We’re supposed to be a team,
right?
No, you’re supposed to be the
mother and I’m supposed to be
the kid.
Yeah, I love Drew’s commentary.
She says.
Whoa, right.
OK.
Yeah, silenced me.
And OK, you know, that’s what
was going through her head.
And, you know, this is so true
to Drew’s actual childhood.
Like, we’re supposed to be a
team.
Like, no.
And I just happened, like,
literally since we last
recorded.
I just dropped this in here.
I just happened to come across
this clip of her talking about
such a similar thing from 1990.
There’s a lot of conflict going
on.
You know, it’s like, I don’t
know whether to treat her like a
partner or mother.
It’s just so interesting.
It’s like exactly.
It’s very, I mean, I guess that
is the dynamic of a single
mother with an only kid at
times.
Is this like, that’s your
partner, that’s your.
It’d be hard to to do it another
way, I guess.
I don’t know.
Yeah, especially if you’re
immature.
Yeah, totally, Drew.
Not true.
I always keep, I always do that
when we’re doing.
Movies she is Bev.
Drew’s about to get in big
trouble as Bev Bev Bev’s about
to get in big trouble.
This is a great look you point
out.
Like how good she looks?
In the hot drying scene, as I as
I would refer to it, yeah, she
looks, she’s got like a green
body suit on.
And I don’t know, I always just
loved.
It’s a short little scene.
I’ve always loved how she looks
there.
And I remember, I think this
picture is from the official
website, the Writing Cards with
Voice website.
It’s a.
Beautiful.
Picture so it’s very tiny
because we’re talking 2001
Internet, but there’s this
really beautiful photo of her
again, this is like a deleted
part where she’s standing out on
the right stoop of the house
like looking mad.
Maybe.
Who knows what’s going on, like
ah, maybe we made the shooting
script.
I looked for it.
I never found it.
I realized that she looks like
my mom in this scene, like my
mom used to wear like, body
suits and like, corduroys or
whatever she might be wearing in
this.
I feel like it looks like
something my mom used to wear,
like in the 80s, seventies, like
that.
Yeah.
OK, so you point out.
So the actress who plays Emilia
at age 8, her name is Sky Nicole
Barutziak.
She apparently died young.
That’s yeah, she was like 20,
something like 22 or something.
I know I like looked her up
because I remember now.
I already forgot again.
There’s something else that
she’s in that.
Like I remembered knowing who
she was when she was in this
movie.
And yeah, I saw that and I was
like, oh, that’s right.
That’s so devastating.
I was drug overdose just.
Awful.
Yeah, it was awful.
Lizard and Faye and Bev are in
the kitchen at Bev’s house
drying weed, I think in the
oven.
And they’re they have the kids
outside just kind of hanging out
by themselves outside.
And they had they show like
Jason complaining too about
like.
He’s like throwing smoking.
At the door.
Stay out here.
Yeah.
And Bev’s dad comes up, who’s a
police officer.
And he’s, I don’t know, he’s
just driving around to, like,
see what’s going on in the
neighborhood.
And he sees the kids.
He says hi and Amelia tells she
tells the story that she’s
clearly been fed right to like,
say, which is our parents at the
grocery store, grocery store.
They won’t be back for a little
while or I feel like she says
for a long time or something
anyway.
And then, as grandpa’s walking
away, Jason blurts out Mom’s
inside drying weed.
Yeah, and like, you can’t be
upset with him, right?
Like you can’t even.
He doesn’t understand.
Like the only reason she’s doing
it is to earn money so they can
get out of there.
Yeah, she would like.
He wouldn’t have, you know I
don’t.
Know, yeah, but he’s pissed at
her.
He’s really pissed at her.
So she goes to jail.
She gets bailed out.
And I think at first she doesn’t
realize like how that happened,
right?
She goes home.
We have this neat behind the
scenes picture of Penny like
mimicking how she would like.
Bev and Faye to interact in the
scene, yeah.
She’s like showing Drew again
exactly what to do this.
Is what I want you to do.
So there’s a heartbreaking scene
where Faye has like told Bev,
I’m going to go to like Arizona
with my brother.
Like, this is the only way for
like me to save my family’s
reputation, whatever it is.
She’s just like, I need to beat
my parents.
I need to be away from you.
That’s the only way that my
brother’s going to help.
Whatever it is, Faye is going to
be gone.
This is also like the last time
we see Faye.
In the movie Which?
That’s unfortunate.
Also another person who died.
Young, I know God and like.
That’s also wild.
Like she and her daughter for
the exact.
Connection.
God.
Horrible.
Yeah.
The goodbye scene is just got
that extra layer of sad when you
think about like that.
We’re losing Brittany Murphy and
Drew said that actually was
Britney’s last scene.
And in the commentary she says
we’ll always be friends.
We made a lifelong friendship on
this film.
And I was like, that’s really
sad.
And Drew said she kept crying
during this because it’s like
twofold.
As Bev, she now has to learn how
to do this without Faye.
And as Drew, she now had to
continue doing this movie
without Britney, who has been
like a lifeline for her.
Right.
So sweet.
Yeah, So Bev and Jason are
driving away, and Bev has this
like, very angry look on her
face.
And I was like, this is exactly
what I picture when she talks
about how she never smiled while
filming this.
Like this pissed off but
beautiful face.
She’s just so gorgeous.
She looks totally beautiful.
I think that.
I mean it’s funny because like I
think of Drew’s resting face,
these feels a little more bitchy
than resting face, but if she’s
trying to avoid smiling, you
know it could turn out.
Just actively, beautifully angry
is this.
And then Jason tells her the
truth.
I told grandpa that’s why you’re
everything happened.
And she swerves the car over to
the curb.
And she said that she did that
again in honor of Jade because
that’s what Jade would do.
When Drew got in trouble in the
car, she’d dramatically swerve
off to the side of the road.
Oh, my gosh.
And this is the last scene in
this time frame.
And it ends on such a brutal
note with her telling Jason, you
ruined our lives.
We have no one.
Yeah, it’s.
It’s pretty brutal.
She’s yeah.
She Bev does not know, does not
even think about how what she’s
saying might traumatize her
child.
Like it is it is really brutal.
And that’s like, I mean, I think
that’s another thing when Bev,
that real Bev said like, you
know, Drew is so likable as a
person, like, yeah, for anyone
to say that, you know.
Mm hmm.
So now we jump to present day.
This is a moment of Bev and
Jason.
Jason as a grown man at this
point, they are on their way to
get a book really signed so that
Bev can publish the book that
she’s written about, you know,
her memoir.
Yeah, Were you like, so I’m
like, oh, this is the end of the
movie.
And I like, you know, I’m like
watching it back and forth,
pausing, making notes.
And I was like, there’s still 20
minutes left.
I did.
I did it a few times.
And so I thought about this at
this point, and then also that
brilliant commenter who said the
thing about the limited series
also pointed this out.
We never get to see Bev
accomplishing her goals.
Like we never get to see her
going to college.
It just goes straight to like,
she’s written a book and the
college thing is so important
throughout her whole journey.
It’s kind of crazy that that’s
just like, bloop, don’t worry
about that.
That happened.
We promise.
I know there’s not.
There’s not enough time.
It’s.
Implied I guess, yeah.
Cuz imagine, imagine if they try
to do yeah, like not a letter
but another layer.
The 15 year old scenes probably
could have been a little
shorter, and maybe that’s my
bias coming through because
they’re my least favorite scenes
in the.
Movie well and also because
that’s so much the book probably
I don’t really remember really
well, but like if they’re trying
to be sort of like how much of
the book is about as far as like
percentage of the movie?
Yeah, could be.
You know, I don’t know.
So anyway, so we get Rosie Perez
as Ray’s new wife, Shirley.
Drew said that she was amazing
to work with.
Man, Shirley was wicked also
also Drew said.
Like I didn’t think of her as
Rosie Perez.
I thought of her as Shirley.
Like she says.
Like almost like she didn’t.
She’s not Rosie Perez.
This is not a movie.
What are you talking about?
Of course she was Shirley to me,
you know.
Who’s Rosie Perez?
It’s just funny when she like a
couple times she brings that up.
Of course, I didn’t think about
that.
I was thinking about the lights
of the camera.
What is all this?
And we see Ray, and this is
like, I remember being, like,
shocked when he enters the film
at this point.
Yeah.
And the makeup, I think some of
it has to do with they might
have like sort of removed his
eyebrows, which is always like a
jarring and the and the teeth
and he just looks totally
different.
So I don’t I don’t think that
Drew’s team would have done him.
So I don’t know that we would
say Barbara and Kim are to
credit for this, but whoever it
was amazing.
And and then of course, Steve’s
on himself like, oh, it’s.
It’s all so good.
And then that’s.
Really, really good.
You know, he seems like so air
heady and out of it and like the
way he acts when when he
realizes it’s Bev.
Yeah, and he still doesn’t
realize it’s Jason Bev.
Yeah, it’s me, Ray.
He’s like, so out of it.
And then like, yeah, Ray, this
is your son, Jason.
He’s like, oh, hey.
I mean, he’s probably been on
heroin for the last 20 years.
Oh my God, it’s, it’s
heartbreaking.
But again, I think Steve Zahn
does an amazing job.
And this is my favorite part
with Adam Garcia, like his very
like quiet, like sadness
overseeing this and how
uncomfortable he is is it’s
really good and.
It’s the most that he like the
character too, allows himself to
emote too.
Is like right after that
somewhat too.
I love this thing you pulled up.
OK.
I was like, is this worth
mentioning?
Yes, it’s worth mentioning.
I think you have to put this
like in a side by side.
So like, yeah.
So when she when they get into
the place, Bev like, takes off
her jacket.
And what did you notice about
the outfit?
As soon as I I was like, what is
this look, this hair, this, this
like black jumpsuit, this belt,
What is this reminding me of?
And then I remember when she did
SNL for riding cars with boys in
There’s a a skit where she has
the same haircut, the same black
unbuttoned top, the same pants
as a giant chunky belt.
It’s like, I think she’s
supposed to be like an action
star, isn’t?
That.
Yeah, I think so, yeah.
Yeah, so we’ll put a little side
by side, but it was like almost
crazy to me how similar it was.
I also just like, yeah, I love
that.
I didn’t even think about that.
It was like, so close in time,
too.
Like, yeah, in a couple years at
the very most.
Like, that’s so funny.
OK, so back to the movie, Drew
felt like the dynamic of this
scene of them in the trailer was
really insane because it was
really more like 2 couples
fighting against each other like
and that’s again like comes back
to like Jason almost became her
partner.
And then we I think we talked
about at the beginning of this
that we really didn’t like that.
It was like sort of like we’re
the audience might think there
are a couple other people
around, might think they’re a
couple weird.
But really the the dynamic of
like, yeah, it, it does kind of
feel weirdly.
Like that.
Yeah, I love Shirley is like,
oh, you’re not signing anything.
Like we won $100,000 for it and
drew her angry.
What is so good?
Wait.
Stop.
What give me she?
Has to give you money for this.
What she wrote a book?
With you in it and she’s going
to get rich, then you get money
too, right?
What are you talking about?
What are you talking about?
I’m asking how much should we
get?
I don’t.
Even know what?
Are you starting?
$100,000.
What right should I?
Ever ask you for a dime of child
support?
Out.
Hey, come on.
Come back when you got some
money for us, all right?
Come on.
I’m not leaving.
I’m not leaving and.
Again, like Ray, he’s just like,
OK, we’ll do whatever you want.
Like, sure, I’ll sign this.
He’s so passive.
Yeah.
My gosh, and Drew loves this Ray
and Jason scene so much too,
because their hearts came
through like it was it was like
it was really hard to he.
Is like when he says like so I
guess I’ll never see you again.
Bye.
It’s.
Just like, oh, right, Dad, you
know.
So Ray comes outside to he said
he’s just saying goodbye and he
ends up basically secretly
surreptitiously putting putting
the signed contract crumpled up
into Jason’s pocket while he
like kind of hugs him.
But also this this moment is
very touching.
I mean, for like multiple
reasons, of course.
And then he says goodbye.
It’s sweet.
It’s awkward.
It’s very awkward also because
like, at this moment, Ray is
like, you know, my wife’s
watching me like a hawk.
She don’t.
Look, don’t look.
Don’t look, don’t look.
And another really kind of
sweet, little, very subtle thing
that they put in the movie.
And I wonder if this was at all
in the book.
Probably not.
This feels like a.
Yeah, it feels a little
Hollywood, but so.
Sweet.
So there was a moment earlier
where Jason gave Ray his tooth.
It was right before Ray had to
leave the family, and he gives
it back to Jason, crumpled up
inside this paper, and it’s a
very it’s not even like, spoken,
and Jason’s a little confused by
it.
I think he doesn’t quite know
what he’s looking at at first.
They don’t even like zoom in and
do like a close up of it.
Yeah, it’s very subtle.
But then you have to think like
Ray kept it all this time, and
he knew exactly where it was.
Yeah.
I know, I know.
So it’s not like he forgot him.
He just, I mean, I like the the
another thing about like Ray and
Steve as as Ray and that scene,
he said, is something like I
wouldn’t have known you.
Yeah, so sad.
Yeah.
OK, so Bev and Jason get their
like big moment cause Bev is
like dramatically she had to
like go off Drew’s like she
doesn’t even know where she’s
going, but she just has to walk
away somewhere and be dramatic.
This part was really where Adam
Garcia’s really struggling with
the accent work here.
Like you can really tell he does
not like have like a normal
American accent.
Right.
And Drew, of course, says a sad
but funny line of when does this
job ever end About being a mom?
But Drew said she was also
speaking about how long she had
been filming and being this
character.
Like Penny.
When is this going to be over?
Oh my.
God.
And she said she went to a
bathroom in a restaurant nearby
and just cried.
Like, yeah, because it was just
like this, you know?
But also the fact that it’s like
it’s dual she was tired from.
Doing the job.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And she said in this moment,
something inside her and Bev
cracked at the same time.
So that’s kind of cool.
Like, yeah, this dual layers
that are happening throughout so
much of the movie for her.
Yeah.
We get the line of dialogue that
we see her looping in Mt VS
diary where she says I screwed
up.
Like every time I hear that I’m
like instantly back to watching
diary.
Same.
Totally.
And it’s, you know, this is kind
of like.
It’s.
Kind of wrapping everything up
in a bow all of a sudden because
Jason tells her, you know, I’m
in love with Amelia and like, I
want to go be with her but I
can’t because of you.
And then all of a sudden she’s
like softer and she’s like, oh,
OK, go be with her.
And you were what saved me.
And I don’t know, it just feels
a little quick for me.
The tone shifts in a way that
doesn’t feel like Bev’s
personality suddenly.
Like, yeah, yeah.
Like, I mean, I don’t remember.
I mean OK, this part wouldn’t be
in the book because this is
supposed to be right?
Like after the events of the
book?
And I think the whole thing with
Amelia is completely
fictionalized, yeah.
But it doesn’t.
Yeah, that doesn’t really feel
like Bev, But I think as a
script, I could imagine they
would have been like, it can’t
just end with her just being a
bitch.
Yeah, I mean like I drew.
Drew said that she loved that
the film had triumph in the end.
But it doesn’t feel sugar
coated.
But it feels a little sugar
coated.
Yeah, it’s a little sweet.
It’s a little too sweet.
There’s a little bit too much.
It’s like a little saccharine or
whatever people say somethings
like that’s.
A good way of putting it and
then this is our final like Jade
move inspired by Jade where she
hugs him goodbye and she like
pets the back of his head while
she doesn’t she said that that’s
that’s how her mom hugs her too
and.
Then like how she said something
and I just let her.
Yeah.
That’s right.
So in the car with dad at the
end of the movie, Drew said was
her favorite scene in the whole
movie.
She said it was a miracle the
scene was allowed to be quiet
with no score.
Thank God for that.
I mean, this is the part where
she ends up singing.
And I know that she didn’t like
doing that.
She said that she hoped in this
lifetime she would get a moment
like this with her own father,
where it would all be forgiven.
But she did get the bare feet.
You were made perfect a few
years later, so.
Yeah, that was something when
she said that in the commentary,
I was like, future Drew, you are
going to get that moment.
I’m so.
Glad.
I’m so glad, yeah.
And I love the screen cap of
them in the car where you can
really see the emotion in Drew’s
face as Bev like.
I think her face acting in this
scene is really good.
And it, it also made me choke up
for the second time watching
this movie.
And it’s again, the dual layer
of like, knowing that she wants
that with her own dad.
And like, Bev gets this moment
and yeah, it’s it’s lovely.
And but it is funny.
Like at the same time I’m also
like giggling to myself self
imagining her looping the
singing and how upset she was.
Yes, of.
Course it’s going to.
Suck.
I can make your mind I hate
that.
And that’s the end of the movie.
But was it originally?
Because once again, in the
trailer, you see her as this
version of Bev back home giving
her mom a hug.
So interesting.
I think that where was that?
I mean, it is kind of sad the
mom doesn’t get any kind of like
we don’t get any follow up on
how she’s doing with her mom,
but it’s ready in cars with
boys.
So sorry, mom.
Good.
And it it is like a nice way to
end the movie and I think it’s
probably the right choice.
But I’m very curious about this
scene with Laureen Bracco like
me too.
Well, this will we ever seen
this?
Probably not.
And one more thing before we
talk about the release is like
in the credits, they have all
these.
Pictures that are so.
Fun Like a bunch of pictures
that are either.
I mean I think some are like
just set and then other ones
seem like they’re supposed to be
like the characters.
Yeah, but there’s a lot that we
don’t have, like, in our
archives.
So I screamed at them.
I was like, oh, these aren’t
something that we have
digitally.
Like this is awesome.
Yeah, so that’s always fun when
a credit sequence has some fun
stuff.
Yeah, I love that.
I always live for that, totally.
Dream, dream, dream, dream,
dream.
So there’s some fun things in
the release, including something
that kind of changed my life so,
so.
Well, you know, the when I met
Drew.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Changed our lives.
Yes.
Totally.
By proxy.
Totally.
So there was lots of press for
this movie.
I’m including MTV Diary, which
we’ve talked about covered the
best Saturday Night Live, which
we just mentioned, and a full
cast photo shoot for Vanity
Fair, which was so cool.
I wish we had more of these.
I know I’m like, you got all
these people, 14 people together
and we’ve seen the, we printed
one photo and we’ve seen one
outtake and that’s it.
Crazy.
Yeah, and there was no red
carpet premiere.
It was right around 911.
So that definitely could have
come into play.
Drew struggled promoting it in
the aftermath of 911 as well.
Just like emotionally, she felt
like it was not right.
They talked about it in a.
Diary a bit.
Just like I don’t want to be out
promoting a movie right now.
Right.
And the SNL thing is a whole
nother deal, like where she got
scared and left and because
there was the anthrax scare.
Yeah, that’s.
Right, She talked about the like
monologue, right?
Yeah.
Which we’ve done an episode
about the monologues we have.
I was just going to say so are
there some outtakes of this in a
German in style where it’s just
drew just.
Drew yeah, we’ve.
Seen a little.
Car of just Drew.
Yeah, with this car that
Brittany Murphy’s sitting on in
this other outtake, Yeah, it’s
pretty goofy.
It’s like a Tonka truck or
whatever those are called.
It’s so funny but.
And Flossy’s there.
How cute.
So Drew said.
This movie is going to be two
hours of uncomfortability and
funniness and awkwardness and
truth.
In reality, it’s an amazing
story for people.
It’s from the Prescott.
All the trailers and ads, we
talked about this a little bit,
but they played up the comedy
and goofy moments and it was not
marketed as a drama at all.
At all.
Which is odd.
I watched seven TV spots and the
trailer because I started
getting on like this role.
And one of them literally says,
see the comedy that celebrates
motherhood.
And I was like, no, don’t go to
this movie.
That’s the joke.
The joke is see the comedy that
celebrates motherhood.
That is the joke, no?
I think that really hurt.
Hurt the movie and we’ll talk.
I mean and.
Also like think of like the
poster feels really like bright
and cute.
Yeah, you know, coming of age sweet story
or something like that.
Very weird.
There was a movie tie in edition
of the book that was released
and Drew and Bev the Real Bev
did a signing on October 5th of
was the first time I got to meet
Drew.
Yeah.
It was really cool.
I have a signed copy from this
and so does Ashley.
I know I got lucky.
Somebody went on my behalf
without even telling me they
were going, I don’t think.
Yep, and that was quite amazing.
I’ve talked about it many times.
I was how old at the time?
Let’s see, 2001 almost 17.
Wow, okay.
Amazing.
And I love that these are in the
Drusium now as part of like
they’re part of our lore and
Drews lore as Bev two.
Yeah, she signed the books,
which is really which was fun.
I like, went through the line
twice because I was greedy.
So I have one that’s the full
Drew Barrymore Green because she
was married to Tom Green at the
time.
And then the one in the back of
my book just says DBG I think.
She’s like, I’m getting tired.
Yeah, this is this is enough.
The movie was released in the
United States on October 19th of
Donnie Darko’s initial limited
release, which is also.
Weird, like can you even believe
we got 2 Drew movies within a
week of each other?
And I didn’t get to see Donnie
Darko, I don’t think, on the
first run.
Oh OK, I saw opening weekend.
I know you did.
Amazing.
So one of the reasons we’re
doing this is to celebrate the
which I know we mentioned at the
top.
But how?
Here we go.
Weird.
Also, it was a bit of a box
office failure.
Again, like we mentioned 911 and
the marketing wasn’t great, so
who knows what the many
contributing factors might have
been, but it did not do well.
There was an Oscar campaign for
Drew, so there is an ad that we
have in our collection.
And we have a bunch of ads like
Oh, I forgot that there was like
a whole series.
There was and there’s like a VHS
like it.
It was a campaign.
OK, so there was a full campaign
for Drew but not Steve Zahn,
surprisingly.
I feel like he could have been
like nominated for supporting,
but totally Roger Ebert said
that Drew and Steve both played
all ages convincingly and
powerful performances that could
be Oscar contenders.
So Roger Ebert, who said things
about Drew that were lovely.
Many times.
Most of the time, yeah, he
didn’t like Charlie’s Angels or
The Wedding Singer, so we’re
going to side eye him for that.
But but, yeah, and I mentioned
this earlier in the episode,
that’s part of my like, I
thought this was gonna be her
chance at like, yeah, Oscar.
And so I was so disappointed
that that’s not the way things
went.
Right.
But at least we have all these
beautiful ads.
Yeah.
For your consideration.
Ads, All right, so the reviews
were very mixed.
And, you know, I understand
those like the overall Rotten
Tomatoes consensus.
I’m like, Yep, this is how I
feel.
It says it suffers from mixing
grit and pathos with cuteness
and comedy, where it’s just like
that weird clashing of tones.
But some of the reviews are
really nice, and some of them
are not.
So the New York Times said Miss
Barrymore holds her own while
sailing into previously
uncharted dramatic territory.
She carries an innate likability
insurance that makes you root
for Beverly even in the most
unflattering circumstances.
Well, that’s funny.
That’s almost exactly why Bev
was like, oh, I want her to play
me because Yep, I’m not likable.
And she is.
Exactly, the San Francisco
Chronicle wrote.
Neither Barrymore, who’s never
played a role this ambitious
before, nor director Penny
Marshall, who Peppers the movie
with sight gags and sitcom
broadness, ever come to terms
with Beverly.
Yeah, I mean, I think Drew did,
but that’s just that’s just me.
salon.com.
They said Marshall’s biggest
crime in writing cards with boys
is the way she undermines the
subtlety of her actors.
Hard agree.
They went on to say.
Drew’s one of those actresses
who responds so naturally and
effortlessly to the camera that
she’s often able to tap
something true in deep.
Here, though, she comes off
feeling forced and awkward, as
if she’s had trouble latching
onto her place in the movie.
And that’s one of those things
where I’m like, Is that because
Penny was like, do it exactly
like this, You know, I couldn’t
like, feel natural.
It had to just be she was worn
down into something that wasn’t,
you know, I don’t know.
But I mean, also when when Drew
talks about Drew and Penny both
talk about the fact that she
didn’t want her to do anything
she’d ever done.
So then it seems like she’s like
you seem constructed constantly.
Like you’re so much like Drew.
You can’t be like Drew.
Don’t be, don’t do Drew, you
know, but like, yeah, but I
don’t know.
It’s, it’s, it’s odd.
It just results in this
something that’s like, that’s
not how maybe Drew would do it.
We know this now anyway.
So Entertainment Weekly wrote.
Barrymore’s got a special
empathy for girls who are
handfuls, infusing every role
she plays with her own
rebellious but sweet wild card
on Late Show.
Energy director Penny Marshall,
though, regularly downshifts the
anger and riding cars with boys
to low gear.
Cute every time the road gets
good and tough.
When Barrymore finally gets me
in the movie finally gets good.
Then comes another sing along.
Damn it.
So it’s like the very, very in
line with like my frustrations.
It’s the tonal oddness.
Yeah, but I don’t want to sound
like I’m shitting on this whole
movie.
Like I know.
We I actually enjoyed it.
This has a.
Place in my heart I enjoy
watching it.
There’s just.
We just have that like, that’s a
little weird.
And like what it could have
been, you know, I’ll always feel
that way.
So Speaking of like what could
have been, I feel like in a lot
of ways, Grey Gardens is sort of
Drew’s redemption for what this
movie could have been.
And there’s so many similarities
right there.
They’re both period pieces.
She’s playing real life people
in both of them.
She has to do intense accent
work.
She has to age.
I even remember, and it’s been
so long since I’ve seen Grey
Gardens, I can’t wait till we
cover it again.
But I remember when she’s
playing, I think 18, there was
something about the way she
carried herself and it’s totally
different than the way she does
like.
Dev at. 15.
Like it’s totally different from
that and I but I remember being
like, wow, I’m really believing
she’s like young here, you know?
She’s so good and great garden
so I’m so glad she received
accolades and.
Right.
That’s what I mean.
Redemption.
Yeah.
Also just the way that she
completely immersed herself in
the character and the time
period while she filmed both of
these movies.
Like, I’m not gonna, I’m not
gonna talk to anybody.
I’m not gonna do anything
anachronistic.
And those are the only times
we’ve heard her working that way
for those two films.
I swear part of her is like this
is Mike do over.
I’m sure if we were to.
Ask her.
She would say absolutely.
I’m going to add that to our
list of questions.
I finally started one, by the
way, because we’re always like,
we’ll have to ask her one day.
Yeah, that’s great.
It’s going to be so many odd
things and I can’t wait.
So the movie was released on
video and DVD on March 19th of
That feels fast but also like.
Yeah, and I was going to say, so
ET was re released in theaters
March 22nd, 2002.
And you came to my house, my
apartment in Irvine so we could
go see that together.
I think he might have stayed for
a while because I fully remember
us watching this DVD with the
commentary in that apartment
living room.
How funny.
Yeah, I love that.
I love that.
It had to be like I stayed with
you for a few days and we.
Just were like, OK, we’re going
to get this DVD and then a few
days later we’re going to go
watch ET together.
I love it.
Drooling out for a few days.
Yeah.
So you mentioned that, that this
DVD contains some special
features.
So it has commentary with Drew,
her first ever commentary, and
she’s all alone in it.
It’s really cool.
I love her.
She’s like, am I doing this
right?
Like a few times.
Throughout, you noted that she
must have recorded it very soon
after the movie’s release, as
she was still married to Tom
Green at the point, and she they
divorced two months after the
release of the DVD, right?
No, the release of the movie,
OK.
Weird.
Yeah.
So she must have done this like
November of 2000 and.
One.
Wow.
Weird.
I know she’s and she’s still
talking about him how he’s the
best person on the planet.
Crazy how fast that changed.
My gosh.
The Making of featurette is
available on YouTube, so we’ll
be linking to that as long as
it’s available.
You know, some things like that
can come up and down on the
Internet.
Plus there are a few shorter
featurettes, all including like
lot of behind the scenes
footage.
One of them is focused on her
trailer.
So it’s got like some kind of
quick pans of her trailer.
Really cool.
I mean, we talked about this in
our Charlie’s Angels episode.
This is the era of DVDs just
being jam packed with so much
extra stuff and like, that is
just gone and it makes me so
sad.
Like we used to get so spoiled
with this type of stuff.
Yeah.
And we and we’ve talked about
kind of how the demise of that
has led to like there’s a few
behind the scenes thing shown on
like social media.
Or and that’s about it.
I mean, the fact that we still
don’t have like a whippet
commentary or there might be
like a making a feature out on
that DVD.
But if?
Is it really not like?
There might be, but there’s no
the fact that we don’t have a
Whippet director’s commentary
from Drew will forever make me
sad.
Well, we’re going to have her do
that on the episode when we
come.
OK, so we’re going to need you
for about two hours minimum.
If you can do one week that’d be
great.
Yeah, all right, Let’s just go
on to, like retreat together.
We’re going to be asking you.
We’re going to be, like,
grilling you the whole time,
yeah.
And then she’s going to say,
when does this job?
Ever end?
Exactly.
But this episode has finally
ended.
Took us a couple.
Recording sessions, it took us
like weeks of prep.
This is a biggie.
I’m scared to know what the time
stamp is going to be guys, but
cool if you made it this far in,
thank you.
Thanks for being OK with me
having criticisms of this movie.
I hope you didn’t just go.
I love this movie.
F you Ashley and turn it off.
So if you’re still here, thank
you.
I tried to be like balanced.
You know, I think we found our
balance.
Yeah, and you do a great job
balancing me out when I get
like, make upset about
something.
So thank God for that.
That’s.
So funny rate review subscribe

When does your new magazine come?
Hi there! We are a fansite and can’t speak on official behalf of Barrymore Brands. However, we can let you know that Drew magazine has sadly ceased publication. It will now be released in a mini-form inside of Us Weekly on a quarterly basis.
We’ve not seen it anywhere here in the states at all, and it’s June already.
As mentioned above, if you are looking for Drew Magazine, it’s no longer in publication.
Oh No why? To much for her to do ?
Yes, exactly. It’s a bummer but definitely understandable with how much she’s constantly juggling!
